Come to think of it, if the M9 is full frame, and an EVF could be added (say, on the hot shoe), most manual lenses could be adapted to it, including your favorite M42, Nikkor and Canon lenses ....

I know at least 3 professionals who shoot film leicas for their projects exclusively.
Alan Chin, a NY based photog for Newsweek uses his religiously. He's documented both Afghanistan, Iraq, and various other conflicts using his film leicas.
They are there, and they are usually diehard.

It's all very exiting, and I would like to see Leica thrive, but as an amateur, and now a pensioner, there is no way I could pay this sort of money into my hobby - and I don't think I would - if I could!. To be practical - every time I see hordes of professionals at events, on TV, newsreels etc., they are all armed with a DSLR and big, fast, zoom!, when I go to the many tourist hotspots over here, and in other countries, I see more and more DSLR's with (not so fast!) zooms!, that's the way it is, now!....and that's the way it will stay for a long time - IMO!.

The M8.x will be dead as a doorknob, when the M9 arrives and Leica will be glad to see it go. Not necessarily because it is a bad camera. It's quirky, but not bad.
But they will be glad to see it go, because it appears to be difficult and expensive to build.
If you take a look inside of the M8 it's a little something of a train wreck. The guts look like it was designed and built in the 1990's. It's mostly off the shelf components and not the most elegant engineering.
In Leica's defense they put the M8 together under enormous financial and time pressure and should be congratulated for getting it as right as they did. Quirks and all.
But I'm willing to bet that they were working on certain aspects of the M9 the moment the M8 left the factory. They aren't dumb and know they can do better.

For work, I bought a pair of D1x Nikons when they first came out at $6500K each. Spent $7K on lenses for them. Spent $12,000 on a 1.6MPixel DSLR in 1992. Again, for work.
Too bad I can't think of a reason why I need an M9 for work.

I'm a photojournalist with a Leica.
I get comments about it pretty often. Mostly "Is that film?" Or "What kind of camera is that?" The knowledgeable ones just want to fondle it. On separate assignments I had a photographer from Newsday itching to fondle it. Another from Daily News was wondering what I was doing afterward so she can check it out. And once at a journalist party I had a different Daily News photographer say to me "That's cool. But what camera do you use for work?"
The Leica was designed for journalism. And I'll keep using it to that end as long as there's a press card around my neck. I used one all through college. And at my first professional job at a magazine in 2007 I used an M7 and scanned film. Then once I had enough cash. I sold all my Canon gear which at the time included a 20D, and bought the M8.
98% of the photos on my site were with a Leica. Either M7 or M8. 1 was with a Pentax K1000 and like 2 were with a Panasonic DMC-L1

Why do I need to buy new Leica bodies? My newest M body isn't even forty yet. That's Leica's big problem. Some of us use the crap out of them year after year after year and don't feel the need to "upgrade", while other owners burn incense, light candles, and chant excitedly about beauty and bokeh. The Learned Ones get into endless nit-picking discussions of anthracite, black paint, or black chrome, and then there's th 0.58, 0.72, or 0.92 finder magification conundrum, "grips" or not, to motor or not to motor. Fun, huh?

Let's discuss split rings: round split rings, D shaped split rings, triangular split rings, or triangular split rings with the cross piece? Which do you prefer? And why the heck aren't they available in black paint? Is chromed brass less likely to cause undue wear on the lugs than stainless steel split rings? Do you prefer straps that open up or come apart so they can be threaded through the split rings, or is it better to open the split ring to turn it onto the strap?
I wouldn't mind Leica switching over to the Rollei clip ended straps if Leica could modify Leica M lugs to accept them, but I've only seen brown Rollei straps and they wouldn't look nice on anthracite painted bodies anyway 😀 unless Cameraleather offered matching brown emu leather.
