9AM, 9/9/09 announcement

There's always two options:

(A) Get all worked up about what might or might not happen in 11 days time

I wonder why so many of you guys choose option (A). On the losing side option (A) raises your blood pressure and increases the possibility of disappointment if there's no announcement on September 9, or if you don't get what you were thinking of.

Apple also has an announcement pending on September 9th. Either way. It's going to be a cool new toy day.

"Would removing the superimposition of an image negate the Leica connection? Not using film seems not to have."

It would negate their M camera customer base. :)

They need the flexibility to redesign the body, but I don't think they can get away with it. This is the company that put a removable base on the M8.

Whether Fuji or Kodak holds the patent, Kodak made the M8 sensor, so either had their own implementation or used the Fuji patent via cross-licensing or royalty.

The LeiPhone is what we've all been waiting for.

Considering all the secrecy regarding that upcoming event, they might have teamed up with Apple. Perhaps they will present the new FF Leica Unibody Pro with extended battery life, but lacking the possibility to change the battery. That would explain why the rumor has it that there will be a grey one - it must be the aluminium unibody!

I hope they don't change the body. It's familiar and comfortable the way it is.

I was thinking about this earlier. Wouldn't it be great if they had a new high sensitivity sensor that also offered sensor based Image Stabilization. The things that could be done with a clean ISO 6400, Image Stabilization, Leica's low vibration mirror-less shutter, and an f1.4 lens. I'd kill for that even with a 1.3x crop and 10MP.

There are certainly people around here that said that a FF RF would not be coming this year,t hat it was not technically possibly, or am I wrong?

I think the point I'm trying to make is that there are a lot of people who love to say what cannot be without actually knowing what is what. This is not a shocking revelation but I would love some of those individuals to just say they were wrong.

Never going to happen though...

I wouldn't be surprised if all this M9 stuff is wishful thinking and it's more like a new Micro 4/3rds camera with a slew of lenses.

If they’ve solved the short resister problem then the FFM9 sales will hopefully help finance a FF hybrid, EVF, AF camera.
A whole new leica system to include light weight compact AF lenses. This compact beast would look to do battle against the dslr’s in both the documentary and PJ markets. :D

If indeed it is a ff M9 AND the hi iso performance is close to those of Nikon's D3/D700, photojournalists will find a way to get one into their camera bag. The hi iso is basically a must for photoj's. If the price of the camera comes in under what's been floating around, I could see many shooters checking their bank balances.

Interesting times.

Not only did Leica cease to be relevant for pro photographers years ago, but photojournalism is in worse shape than Leica.

If they put a FF sensor in a IIIf RDST body, I'll be interested. Otherwise, meh...

For historical sake, I hope Leica doesn't do this. Photography technically is getting too easy IMHO...but I suspect that in order for Leica to survive the digital revolution, they will need to do something automatic to rival mid-high range DSLR's...so sad indeed.

I think those that long for an AF M really don't understand or appreciate the M rangefinder. While autofocus has it's advantages, it just destroys the whole sole of a rangefinder camera.

The "sole" being the baseplate :p (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

And while it isn't the same thing as an M, my Contax G2 is a good camera and isn't at all "soul-less" in my estimation. As it happens, I generally prefer my M-type cameras for a lot of things, but sometimes the G2 is very much the best fit for a purpose.

I'm sure there would be lots of people who'd like to see a digital Contax G (that's not speculation: I've seen 'em posting here on RFF).
