A big thank you to Mr Roger Hicks

I used to be one. Got laid off about 2 years ago and that gave me the time to be a father and a photographer with a life. The $$$ gets a bit tight on one income, but overall it's been a very good trade indeed.

You got a manual? Can you tell me where I can get a manual?

I'm just winging it.

You can buy reprints on ebay for $437, even though the original was free and is still available for the asking.

Roger should be thanking us. We give him topics to write about. And we're very, very, smart. And handsome.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Do you suppose that's why the site has been so slow the past couple of days? Throngs of AP readers checking us out?

You are right about the site -- it has been really slooooow the past couple of days.

Life sucks anyway. Trust me, i tried.

Hey Roger, it's an honour to "talk" to you. (I have my serious moments too.)

Well, gosh, thanks folks!

But you're right: it's all about loving photography in general and rangefinders in particular. And (as I say in AP) a lot of my readers are better photographers than I. I'm just better at annoying people in print...

Roger (www.rogerandfrances.com -- to be updated soon, honest!)

For those who don't read the AP, It's always a lot of fun to get past the letters page of the the usual film v digi debate along with other moans and groans as to what we can't point our cameras this week . Over the page we check up on Rogers light hearted (usually) sideways glance (through an RF of course) at the photographic world. I'm sure it winds up a few snobs but to many of us gives us a kick up the behind and stop whining and take some photo's and enjoy life for what it is.

Thanks Roger, all the best from us all at the RFF and AP readership.

Keep it up Roger, the cage needs a good rattle now and then!! The letters pages following these are usually good for a real laugh. you know the types, signed, "Annoyed from Little Piddle in the Wood":D

Dear John,

Yes, especially the ones that begin "Speaking as a..."

And once again thanks to everyone for the kind words.

Cheers,

Roger

Speaking as an AP reader who had been lurking on RFF for some time before it was mentioned in AP, rather than one who has recently crawled out of the woodwork, I have to say that Roger's column is - along with Mike Maloney's critique of readers' pictures - the part of the magazine I look forward to most, and invariably enjoy, for the different perspective it brings.

I'd also like to mention that I've just finished reading Roger's (and Frances', of course) book Quality in Photography, and found it very stimulating, even if the second half, relating to darkroom work, went almost entirely over my head.

Oh yeah, well I just read one of Roger's articles from August 2003 and I can't stop thinking about getting a Pentax SV now. I don't know what he puts in that stuff he writes, but it has bitten me badly. Beware!!! :)

And Roger, when is Frances going to join in our fun? I would love to hear her participation in our conversations, particularly about film development and darkroom issues.

Dear Leicanthrope,

Thanks for the kind words,

and

Dear Rover,

Sorry. But SVs really ARE very nice.

Cheers,

Roger

And now a brief message from Frances:

Hi. I'll join in whenever you want to talk darkroom. I'm not much into communicating by computer, but I'll try.

Cheers,

Frances

Roger & Frances' "The Lens Book" was the first serious work on photography that I bought, and was what initially turned me on to Leica. Thanks for that Roger. :)

PS Hope there's not too many "long words" in this. Don't wanna look even more stupid than usual.
