Both actually.
A magnesium body would not be much fun if it caught on fire, so the camera manufacturers make magnesium alloys with aluminum. the main share is aluminum, but for marketing that's not cool enough so the cameras are usually sold with "magnesium alloy body".

Under Black Zeiss Ikon ZM is silver and brass/aluminium colours. I'm modifying my Zeiss Ikon now.

... clearly a magnesium alloy (the stuff they make racing car wheels from) is inferior to brass (that's used to make carriage clocks)

Yeah, my Bessa R did the same. Upgrading to a body shell made from actual metal is probably the main reason why the R2/R3/R4 cameras are more expensive.

Well, I had a look under the top and bottom caps, so I hope they upgraded some of the gearwheels from plastic to metal too...
