Just looking at a photographic retailer's web site this morning and found this product on offer. I laughed out loud. I suppose I can (just about) see why someone travelling with a digital compact might want one but something about it makes me laugh.

Amy more amusing / ridiculous gadgets and inventions ?

Ridiculous as it may look at first sight, this stick is quite useful. The knack is of course not to put the camera on that stick, but the flash instead.. This can really help to get that highlight where you need it without having to pull out the light stands.

I've got one of those - far too lightweight for a Leica or SLR but actually really useful for little digitals for stills and video. Enables you to get the camera into places you otherwise wouldn't. A lot of trial and error to get the right shot but quite amusing when it works. Much easier to carry than a monopod but not very sturdy - still, it cost me less than a tenner so my expectations were not unreasonable - anyone can see it's not a serious tool so good to see that its served its purpose in providing amusement.

actually, it is bad
it takes out the fun of asking unknown people to take your picture in front of x -
1. conversation starter
2. fun to look at how they are fumbling with a rolleiflex or such
3. guaranteed funny (read: horribe) result

Only in one case i got a surprise in France that a guy took the girlfriend's minolta x500 and set the aperture, focused, composed and exposed with a relaxed routine-like attitude.

Saves you having to interact with those nasty natives to help you take your horrible "include yourself in the frame holiday snaps" when you need to prove you´ve been here and there.

Forget the stick. Buy a CV 15mm. Hold your friend with one arm, hold the camera out a little with the other and take a picture of both of you. I've also used the 15mm held over my head, level and slightly angled down. Works great for crowd shots. Joe

This is great - too bad there isn't a sturdier version with arca-swiss mount. Was just thinking of some designs like this for the M.

I want to quickly drop the rangefinder to ground level for a shot. The body leans slightly forward hanging from the neck-strap attached to the lugs, so I need to be careful setting it down as the lens can touch first (yanking it back up isn't a problem). Also, a 2 second self-timer delay isn't quite enough, and 12 seconds is an eternity (wish there were a custom delay option for the digital m, grrr).

Not as silly as it appears

I was doing a video of my sons high school Jazz Band Playing in Germany and the Germans kept walking infront of the camera on a tripod, so I took my monopod and put the video camera on it and held it high above my head using my belt for support, got some great video, camera on a stick works nice.

I hope the skydiver had the stick and camera tied off, that could kill someone if they get hit by a falling camera on a stick.

A monopod can do the same thing, and a lot of others as well. Set the self timer and get a shot from way over everyone's head. Shoot in light too low for hand holding. Double as a walking stick. And I've already got a monopod.
