Think of the first if you plan to use also on MF bodies and need 1:2 macro setting, while the second if you like a little more versatility in a very compact package.
I see a few people have recommended the Nikon 24-85 afs 3.5-4.5 lens and I have to say that my copy is sharp and colourful. It might be another good candidate if you can live with the 85mm max focal length.
I use a 24-85 AF-S G when I want cheap and light on my D700. I paid £100 for it (about 1/2 the going rate) because it had taken a knock on the front, but it works perfectly. I had a 28-105, which is also good, but not quite wide enough for me.
