It was a long weekend, and I found myself relaxing out on the porch and this wonderful still life came together. I must admit, it was my girlfreind who pointed it out, I just took the photo. And lets not start a flame war (no pun intended) this was a five second exposure, the candle is not that big and no Liecas were harmed in the making of the photo.

Too bad you couldn't have fused a few nuclei in honor of old Oppie!

Yes, a good life this is. Philosophic picture as well, you have very old ideas in it: the beer (one of the oldest beverages of mankind, recipes date back to the days of old Sumer), the fire (even older, Homo habilis is said to have used it), the camera (in its obscura version said to have been known in ancient Greece), the book (separately invented in China, Sumer, the Indus valley, ancient America), not to talk of the girlfriend who pointed out the beauty of the setting (very very old evolutional idea of course:angel: ) - and, finally, our times - the atomic bomb.

"Oppie" liked to refer to such thoughts as well. At the first explosion in Alamogordo he also seemed to have felt the tragic aspect. I have read that he quoted the Bagavadghita (with a sentence similar to the idea of Prometheus, comparing man with a god, Shiva):

"I have become death, the destroyer of the worlds."

So, folks, let's enjoy life while we are still around!

I agree, I think I will have another Guinness to start the weekend off right. Although I plan to read more about Oppie, here is the preface to the recent book I am reading. "Modern Prometheans have raided Mount Olympus again and have brought back for man the very thunderbolts of Zeus." --Scientific Monthly September 1945.
