Hi again, I'm a relative newbie round here and need a bit of advice:

Firstly, I don't develop or print these days (insufficent space). However, when I have my negs developed, what would be a good specification to ask for when getting them scenned? I presume TIFF is a 'must' and that 300 dpi is what we should normally print from - but what resolution is acceptable. I just had my first roll done by a high street processor (I know, I know....) and what came back was okay negs but 36 JPEG files of 400kb......

Secondly, with an M6, do I need to alter the exposure to compensate for when I have filters on the lens?

Sorry if these topics have been raised before but your advice would be a great help.

Thanks,

Paul 😕

Dont know about the scanning but you dont have to compensate for the filters if you are using the built-in exposure meter, it measures through the lens (and hence the filter too)

What EmilGil said regarding the metering. As for scanning, it all depends 😉

IIRC when I get a C41 neg film processed, they gave a CD with approx 2.x Meg Pixel scans, something like 1800 x 1200. The short side of a 35mm neg can roughly be seen as an inch (ok, ok, it's a tad shorter), so this translates to about 1200 dpi (dots per inch). More is better, until you touch the resolution limit of the film.

A jpeg of 2-3 MPix size well as about 200 Kbytes, depending on the compression factor. Open an image in a viewer and check the pixel dimensions.

I use my own film scanner and normally use either 2600 dpi or 4000 dpi as a scanning resolution. 1000 dpi is still OK for 5x7 inch prints and probably even larger ones.

Regards
Ivo
