Here are a few of the billboards I shot for the FDNY:

And here's an article regarding the gear I selected, and how I approached the shoot:

Yeah, that's me in the last photo :)

Lovely shots, and nice article. Not entirely sure about the campaign -- the emphasis on 22.5 year pension seems a bit crass -- but congratulations!

Edit: should add that "lifetime health benefits" are taken for granted in most rich societies. And 5 weeks vacation is nothing unusual in Europe.

Cheers,

R.

Hi Roger,

LOL, it's a recruitment campaign for NYC, USA, where a 5 week vacations is unbelievably unusual. And 22.5 year pension is, too -- a huge inducement, when most jobs don't include pensions. And lifetime health benefits -- it costs over $16,000 to insure a family in the US, so that too, is unreal. Not crass at all. This is a 10 million dollar campaign with focus groups and lots of research. The campaign has already resulted in a huge number of applications from a diverse pool of applicants - which was the purpose. Of course, going into a burning building and wearing so much gear is not a picnic.

Looking at your hat, are you thinking of changing your username to LA Dan?

Funny! I bought the had on 9/24/2015 (I think) at Dodger Stadium when it was about 95 degrees in the shade. LA is a great place for street photography. Don't know about a username challenge, we'll see -- maybe if I get to shoot for the FDLA.

Thanks JMQ

Thanks, Lynnb -- it was fun shoot. Don't know when or if I'll get another like it -- hopefully something will come up. That's the hard thing about assignment work, you never know.

Very nice! It's nice to see stories where people are doing professional work and getting paid. I'd like to transition into paid work at some point soon. Just don't know where to even begin. This hobby is expensive!!

Davelleo -- My father saw them back in the day in Brooklyn.

gnuyork -- to begin, get your portfolio together, and website. Then get an Agency Access plan -- they have all the contact info for photo buyers -- research their lists and come up with 50 people you'd like to work for, then send them e-mails once every other month, send printed samples every few months, and try to show them something they can use. It's very tough. I think the best thing is to shoot for yourself, and if that leads to opportunities great. But the business model for photographers who don't want to shoot weddings and events is hard.

Dear Dan,

Sure. I don't blame anyone for applying for such a job in the USA, nor for the FDNY for their pitch. It'd just that as I say, the health care bit seems a bit... primitive... to a European.

The short working life before a pension is good, in that it means that personnel should always be (relatively) young and (relatively) healthy. I just wouldn't trust politicians not to try to weasel their way out of it, as they continually try to do in the UK.

I should add that I greatly admire firemen. A sapeur-pompier lives across the road from me: here in rural France, we have volunteer firemen like him, whom (if anything) I admire even more.

Cheers,

R.

............

So did I (as a kid).
I'd be a rich man today if mom hadn't thrown out my complete set of baseball picture cards (Dodgers, Yankees, Giants), when I left home to chase that pot of gold.

I saw some of these when I was in the city a couple of weeks ago. The images of the firefighters are very compelling.

The shots fit the campaign very well. You captured and communicated some images that I think deliver.

My guess is that even the armed forces don't offer what NYFD does these days.

Hard job, great people doing it.

Thanks for sharing and congratulations on gig! I'm sure they will be all over the subways too.

So we finally get to see what you look like ! Congrats on the assignment and the good work you did.

LOL. No refunds on my looks! Thank you. :)

Thank you! Thanks everyone for looking. I'm hoping to get in the subways and find some firsthand. We'll see.

Dan, thanks for the advice. Yes, I need to organize a portfolio or two (for different markets). And I keep telling myself (for years) I need a website. At this point, I'm looking into Wix, Zenfolio or Square Space...not sure which would be best . Thanks again.

Dan, congratulations on the campaign. The posters and ads are just wonderful. You have captured the expressions of some courageous young people. Perhaps I am biased because our son is about to graduate from "The Rock" in a few weeks, after months of grueling training. Your ads make me proud all over again.
