A few questions about tower type 3

Hello dear forum members:

I have just won a 'dirty' tower type 3 LTM RF from evil bay (my e**y bug bits me again) at a bid for US$109.

I know it should be a nicca (japanese leica copy). But mine comes with a newer canon f1.8 50mm normal lens instead of the correct nikkor H.C. 50mm. ( I know at a price like this I should not complain too much). Here are the questions:

How is that nikkor 50mm H.C. compare to the canon I won (suppose both lenses are in mint conditions, despite that my canon seems to have a lot of 'cleaning marks' 🙁 🙁 )


Can any expert here tell me how to clean the leather covering of the camera body as it seems quite dirty.

Will report again when it arrives and having it sent to get CLA if I can't do it myself.

The Canon 50/1.8 is quite good, and is a "Planar" forumula lens as opposed the the Sonnar-type Nikkor 5cm F2. The Nikkor tends to sell for more.

Check the shutter curtains on the Nicca: mine required replacement. Take off the lens to inspact for smooth operation.

as for cleaning the "vulcanite", a little warm water on a cloth should do it. I've also used leather cleaner.

It's not leather. Whatever it is, it may be brittle, so don't use anything that would dry it out. Both lenses have good reps. Both are tiny. The canon is lighter, if I recall. The nikkor is sharper and sonnar. The canon is planar, I believe. No matter what, at that price, it's a good deal and you should be happy with what you receive, assuming the camera works - fixing it would likely cost more than the camera did as the parts are often not available.

Yes, can't wait to shoot a rol of slide with this tower RF. Thanks for your quick response and suggestion.

Will give it a try with luke-warm water.

The seller assured me that the shutter curtain and the camera works well. But I have to shoot a roll of film to test for pin holes on the curtain (if any).

That's the main problem, The shutter button cup (or ring) is missing. Although it does not seem to interefere with the regular operation, but I stll want to find an alternative / substitute. Will the one from a fed 1 or zorki 1 be used?
