I am completely new to the RD1 with a used sample of an early model.
I have 3 used non EPSON batteries at hand and would like to know a few things about shooting and battery drain.
I do not use the LCD (except some very rare occasions, to check back the exposure in tricky light).
1)
I do like, to have the camera switched of during a longer walk in the city.
Does the RD1 drain the battery by simply having it switched on (switch on on, meter off, LCD display off)?
2)
Can I switch the camera off, while it writes to the card?
3)
What is the usual normal amount of photographs taken with one battery charge with:
a) JPG only
b) raw only
c) JPG + raw ?
4)
Are there modern electronic devices, which share the same battery type with the old RD1 for a up to date high capacity new battery?
5)
Which are the weak points to check with used RD1 (I have only 14 days of money exchange warranty)?

In response to number 4 "Are there modern electronic devices, which share the same battery type with the old RD1 for a up to date high capacity new battery?"
here is some info from photo.net.

It is a common Fuji and Kodak battery used on camcorders and digitals.
Ie Epson RD-1; Fuji; Kodak; Toshiba; Casio; Leica; Ricoh
Fuji NP-80 .
Kodak KLIC-3000
Type in " NP-80 " on ebay and there are 318 hits
Here I have two Epson and One Fuji and one Kodak; one generic for my RD-1
I also have a 12DC car/lighter charger that charges NP-80's; and a spare ac adapter too.
The ma level of batteries vary around 1300 to 1700 ma
a Li-ion battery should be stored at 1/2 charge; not full.
hope that was useful.

The camera must remain on while writing to a card.
Mine does not switch off until it is done writing to the card, even if I try to turn it off. You also can take the next shot while it is still writing the last one to the card.

Yes, it will continue to write to the card after you've switched the camera off.
Go for the higher capacity batteries when you buy replacements. 1500 mAh or higher is my advice.
I think I get about 50 to 75 shots with the original Epson battery (which is 4 years old now).

The positive thing is that self-discharge of the battery is minimal - you can keep it in for months without using it and without having the battery discharge within a week or two the way my Sigma DP2 or Leica M9 do (I keep my R-D1 in my car's glovebox as a backup camera).

Thanks for the info.
I have seen, the camera still writing to the card after the switch off.
I did not test yet, whether all images were written.
As I see the long write times, I feel very comfortable, to switch the camera off, toss it back in the back and move on, rather than standing there and watching the red LED blinking
I have found a nice site, that states, which electronic devices are powered by the NP80 battery:
http://digital-batteries.co.uk/digitalcamerabattery/fujifilm-np-80.htm
Here is a list:
CTA FINEPIX 4800 ZOOM Battery
DELKIN FINEPIX 4800Z Battery
DIGIPOWER FINEPIX 4900 ZOOM Battery
DURACELL FINEPIX 6800 ZOOM Battery
ENERGIZER FINEPIX 6900 ZOOM Battery
FUJIFILM MX-1700 Battery
GP MX-2700 Battery
HAHNEL MX-2900 Battery
HELIOS MX-4900 Battery
KODAK MX-6800 Battery
KODAK MX-6900 Battery
KYOCERA DC4800 Battery
KYOCERA DC4800 Zoom Battery
MAXELL DIGILUX ZOOM Battery
MONSTER CAPLIO RR1 Battery
POLAROID RDC-6000 Battery
RAYOVAC RDC-7 Battery
RICOH RDC-7S Battery
RICOH RDC-i500 Battery
SAKAR PDR-M4 Battery
SANYO PDR-M5 Battery
Sony PDR-M70 Battery
I guess, that qualifies as the longest list of supported devices right after AA cells

I have bought (the only locally available) 2 pcs of 3.7V 1350 mAh "Pisen" branded chinese batteries in a market in Shanghai.
I am using the first fully charged battery now for 2 days (with only little shooting time).
After apr. 100 frames, combined with A LOT of display playing, the battery dial shows still half a load. The best thing is, these batteries cost 5,- EUR each.
No way, somebody moves me to buy EPSONs for 60 EUR each.
The Pisen batteries show clearly, that all 3 used batteries, I got with the camera were dead (one gave less than a roll per charge).
If the chinese batteries prove themselves, I 'll buy 2 or 3 more, a second charger and be good even on longer trips with the R-D1 and a M6.
