i've sent this note a few times in the past week or so...

hi, don't know if you have read any of the threads concerning the number of photos posted at one time...but we are trying to limit the number to about 4 or 5 at a time.
this keeps some of the previously posted pics in view for others to comment on also.
i am trying to avoid having to set rules and limits regarding pics posted.

your cooperation is appreciated.

so folks, please pay attention to this reminder or some rules will have to follow, against my sincere desire NOT to have rules.

i think it may be from members who post to the forum and also do not participate in the forum discussions.

your friendly neighborhood moderator,

I agree that we have to follow some rules.
I would state:

Guys,
Be critical.
Do not publish x shots of the same subject.
Evaluate your work and publish only THE picture that in your opinion has the highest quality
.

Nasty remark: there is a difference between a gallery and a photo album.

Perhaps the quality issue could be settled by submitting them for approval before they are added to the gallery.

Bob

This proposal goes a little bit too far.
Common sense and self-criticism are the best judges.
One of my teachers (along, long, long time ago) stated:

From a picture you like make an enlargement, put it on the wall and if,after looking at it during a week, you still like it you made a photo.

Many fine art photographers are happy when they reach a score of 10-15 photo's a year

ouch!
way too much work.

some of the 'offenders' are not forum participants but use the gallery only.

i like the analogy of photo album to gallery.

ours is a gallery...but we are amateurs and hobbyists so i can see the pull toward album also.
my assumption is that jorge set the gallery up for forum members and not for just anyone out there in cyber space.
i still have a couple of p.m.'s that i sent that have gone unread so i just might delete a few pics to get their attention.
maybe...

I agree that we ought to be more selective (self selective) about the pics we post in the gallery. However, deciding what makes a good picture is very subjective, many technically perfect pictures can also be extremely boring whilst many poor technique pics can be superb images. I think that posting lots of similar pics is meaningless and devalues the gallery.

No, just post about 4 or 5 at a time.

I have to admit I went over by two last night.

IMHO-- an approval process would be very difficult. Quality can be very subjective in a non-professional venue. (heck, it can be subjective in professional circles)

Who would be the judge? Our peers? Who among our peers is completely objective? Not me, I would select what appealed to my sensibilities and interests. Believe me, my opinions already seem to tick off other members. I know others do the same for me.

Too messy.

there will be no approvaal process.

bob, you didn't 'go over' yesterday.
4 or 5 as a number was an approximation for members to have an idea of what we were talking about, 4 or 5 as opposed to 30.

if we hold too fast to 4 or 5 then we have, in effect, set up a rule.

so far, no rules rules...

The point is that there are many different skill levels involved and it just blanks me off when I hear comments on quality. It smacks of elitism. The only way to maintain a quality standard is to have all photos edited which creates other difficulties. Self editing is fine but obviously it is not meeting some imagined standard. By all means set a limit on uploads and if you have a problem with the quality of someones work tell them. You have to decide if you want to encourage people to take photos with RFs and proudly display what they think are good or do you want to discourage people. Maybe only HBC should submit photos. Anyway, end of rant for what it was worth.

Nothing wrong with quality and yes there are different skill levels and consequently different quality levels (whatever that means). The aim is to assess our own pictures and become more selective about what we post, we become our own judges and hopefully improve our standards.

A question on gallery usage...

If under "recent photos' I click on "1 day," that allows me to view up to 24 photos per page. Right now, there have been 44 photos uploaded in the past 24 hours. That's two pages or screens. Not too bad.

Question is... some photos come up twice. I think that happens when an uploaded photo is placed in more than one gallery. Meaning, even if you upload only 5 photos, but store each photo in say, "member galleries" and "street," the end effect is like uploading 10 photos.

Is there a setting in the gallery I have overlooked?

Given the point of this thread, is there a way of preventing that, ie, just showing one photo even if it is in more than one gallery? Would it be wise to ask people to just store each photo in one gallery?

Last days I thinking about my gallery. I have many photos. But only a few have comments. This is my fault. I put many photos that dont have interesting for the RFF members. However I occuped space in the web. Probabbly I update my gallery in the next days. I clean the photos that I think dont have good quality an put other new.

When some person visit our portfolio, we need demonstrate with our photos the best of us

I don't think that is the problem. Your photos are very interesting.

I don't claim that mine are interesting, but aside from the comments, the concerning thing is that you can see that the photos have hardly been viewed by anyone. It is a disturbing trend.

A few months ago, each photo got viewed about 30-50 times. Recently, the numbers have dropped to less than 10.

#1. Maybe you guys have learned to avoid my photos 😉 ,

#2 maybe we all have been remiss in going through the photos in the gallery, or

#3 maybe there has been a jump in the number of uploads that many photos get neglected.

The third is what Joe and the rest are trying to address in this thread. But maybe we should also collectively be paying more attention to #2.

I think the moderators and the admin have good job with our photos. Because always when you enter en Forum, the gallery appear new photos of the members with alternance in the order. This is not the problem here.

The photos of the members would be more selective. Mine equal eh! Because the number photos per day are long, and they are a few of comments. Its impossible see all the photos. Normally we have like some member more than other and see his photos first. The problem for me its the traffic of photos. Collaps the taste and the understanding.

I commit myself to review my gallery and leave only the best photos.

Pd: Ray your photos are fine. I like very much some of your portfolio 🙂
