In 2012 I bought this wooden box for £15 in a car boot sale. It contained 50 glass plates with pictures taken about 100 years ago - if not more.

I decided to scan a couple of them

This is one:

But I think the real gem is this one:

On the glass plate it is written: 'Hastings spratting Boat'. I find this picture beautiful.

When I see photographs like this I think how hard it must have been to live back then.

My great grand parents on my moms side emigrated from Germany and, with the homestead act, ended up in South Dakota because the land was free. Their first house was a sod hut with dirt floors. Tough life. They thought it was just fine as everyone lived that way.

A little more info, when they (great-grand parents) came through Ellis Island, their German name was Mueller and the person checking them in changed it to Miller.

Oooooh! I love this sort of thing, and have a few myself, though I've never found a box like these. Love the fishermen and the billycock hats!

I guess you've already thought the same, but the first one looks French to me.

Somebody in my family has been taking pictures since the early 1900’s. Year’s back, I discovered a box of about 25, 4X5 glass plate negatives in my parent’s basement dating from about 1910 - 1920. All were taken in the Detroit, Michigan area and are of friends and family. We don’t know who took these pictures, but suspect it was my dad’s uncle. Just a wonderful look at a time long gone. Here’s one of a then-new 1915 Ford Model T, the car that changed the world.

Another 100 year old glass plate (Montevideo harbor, from Bella Vista side). Scratched emulsion and all - "scanned" by picture from digicam over a light table.

The pictures I posted are in UK, one in Hastings and the other in Quay. I will scan a few more during the weekend. The rest are a mixture of UK and European (I think) landscapes.

Wonderful stuff indeed. He/she took great care with the verticals and had a good eye for composition and also for texture. Thanks for sharing these.

An exciting find - looking forward to seeing them all. I find vintage photographs fascinating, particularly when well taken like these, even more so when identified for time and place, and people if possible. Thanks for putting them in this thread.

Also I'd recommend viewing the OP's photo blog, excellent work.

(PS. Another treasure trove for those who enjoy found vintage glass plate photos is Trevor Hauxwell-Harland's scans of glass plate negs he's bought from UK boot sales and markets, on Flickr. They look of a similar vintage to Panagiotis's photos.)
