a jewish leica copy?

Damn it, where's my e-meter?

I’ve seen the Zorki Scientology model prototype. There’s a screw missing, light leaks in and erases all your pictures. Did you notice that I said “Zorki Scientology model?” Don’t sue me if you’re a Scientologist, ok? Sue me if you work for Zorki and your name is Stalin.
Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, took over 40,000 photographs! Here he is posing with his Rolleiflex:

Has anyone heard about these photography workshops at Hubbard’s old mansion, Saint Hill Manor, East Grinstead, England?

Don´t have to wait too much I guess.....

As long as collectors exists, there´ll be someone ready or at least eager to bring you (or someone else) what you may ever want.

I guess that Zorki craftsmen (fakers) would bring out as many zorkified versions of old Leicas in any taste! (or should I say leicafied Zorkis instead?)...
Besides...I didn´t see any Kiev "contaxed" in any way... did you?

Well now seriously, I guess that anyone of Us would like to have a customized camera at some time. There is no legal or ethic reason why shouldn´t anyone of Us have it, if there is a clear arrangement between both parties involved, and legal rights of manufacturer are not avoided.
A "replica" is not a fake, as long as it bears that title.
I think that some people in this forum would agree to have one of those Leicaskys just because of what it is, but as a curiosity rather than a real collector´s item. And of course, not paying the premium prices that the real thing may command for.

I´m a newcomer to collecting cameras, however not so nil to be able to think that I´m able to get a hard to find collector´s item for the price of a candy!

Hmmmm... I guess that there are not that many "real things" to be copied...

Let´s see if someone knows how many real cameras can be "faked" or "just "copied"...

Best regards
Saludos

Hola Ernesto!

I have a "contaxed" Kiev that I got from the Ukraine. It came with a fake "50 sm" Sonnar. The 135mm Sonnar in this picture is from Alemania. I replaced the leather with a fake lizard skin kit I got from aki-asahi on eBay. I should have spend the extra $2.50 for the more conventional leather kit they sell on their website.

Hey R.J.!
Nice picture of a nice camera indeed!
To be honest, I would be eager to have one like yours!
Anyway, even being a visible fake, it´s a good camera as well as the lenses.
Is the CZ logo silkscreened or engraved?

Thanks for the answer and of course for the picture!

Gracias!!

Hola Ernesto!

The CZJ logo and "Contax" are both engraved. I bought it from Alex-photo on eBay http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZalexQ2dphoto
It does resemble this genuine "black chrome Contax" on Henry Scherer's website:

Henry Scherer has a section on fake Contaxes:

Hola!
Thanks R.J. for the links!
Unfortunately living in Argentina means that I have to pay a 100% of the sales price plus shipping charges as custom duties so a USD 45 will mean for me at least USD 200 at the end of the line.... quite expensive specially thinking that I can get a very nice one here for less than USD 100 (and fully CLAed and guaranteed).
Otherwise, be sure I will buy something else for my Kiev and Contax from Alex!
How many nice things I´ve seen today!

Besides, did I tell that another Kiev 4 is coming next?

If that isn´t a serious GAS attack (I bought yesterday a Yashica Lynx 14) what the h**l is it?

Regards! / Saludos

Hmm... a Jewish engraving on a German camera sporting definitely unkosher snake skin. 😀

By the way, the engraving on the top plate says, "Property of the State of Israel" in Hebrew lettering. However, one of the letters is rotated by 90°.

It seems that the fakers are not carefull enough or they have some care about leaving any that shows it´s a fake....

Besides, I forgot if I´d say it before.... but did anyone see any japanese military camera?
I´m sure the japanese armed forces shoud have some in service during WW II, but I never heard anything about those cameras.

Regards!

The only Japanese military cameras I have ever seen anything of are the machine gun cameras, reportedly used for target practice on boats and planes.

Here is a link to one such camera:

http://www.cmp.ucr.edu/cameras/Machine_Gun_Camera.html

Other than that, I don't knoe of any Japanese military cameras. I guess they would have used Nikons or Konicas or even Canons, depending what era .

There was a Canon P model issued to the Japanese Self-defense Forces in 1959. They sometimes find their way to the local online auction sites here in Japan. The main difference is the presence of a red sakura (cherry blossom) mark on top near the hot shoe. It's very easy to make a "replica" if you want one. 🙂

Popitz:
Thank you for the information. The way to make a "replica" is very simple, however it wouldn´t matter in case I can find a Canon P in good shape!
This is unfortunately not too easy to accomplish living in Argentina: the few Canon P or Canon VII I´ve seen were only usable as spare parts. But I still expect to be lucky at some time...

Heath:
Thanks for the link. I didn´t know of anything like that camera before. It´s a very simple idea to save ammo shooting film instead. Besides, I think as you do that Japanese armed Forces during WW II were using standard cameras without any special markings.
At least apparently nothing of that kind has resurfaced since (in my knowledge).

Ernesto
