My standard repair for red dots is buy a set of the cheapest plastic kid art brushes you can find. Cut off the handle tip from a red one, glue that in place.
Years ago I had the red dot on my 50mm Summicron fall out while traveling in India. Thought of getting a little ruby cabochon but found a turquoise that was a perfect fit. Ruby is also very hard and could cause problems if it came off in a case. Stuck the turquoise in with a dab of epoxy and its held for close to forty years.
It's also fun if a Leica-phile notices, then you can tell them about the rare blue dot Summicrons selected for perfect bokeh and sharpness...., only one in 10,000 makes the grade. Sometimes it's difficult keeping a straight face while describing the selection process.... ;-)
Yes, as always, in everything, can! Around photo gear, perhaps especially Leica, can seen lot of funny phenomens. One is how lost dot can drop prise from 450€ to 350€. One more: A tiny mark in a lens surface can drop prise 75%. Thus I understand this. . I can see it natural. We are funny.
I got some suitable sized half-ball shaped garnets from my friend, and now I fixed them. 🙂
I use a tiny screwdriver for cleaning and tarnish the lens hole and 240 sandpaper for making garnets contact-surface matte. With a screwdriver I put epoxy to the hole and with fingers the garnet to it.
