a more orderly comparison of canon 50/1.8, j-8, i-50

using a tripod, same subjects, same distance and same fstops, and making all comparision shots withing a couple of minutes of one another. sorry about the size. pics have been huge since i switched to photobucket pro. need to do something about it. bw400cn film, walgreens processing, scanning:
canon 50/1.8, f3.5, focus on the chevy emblem ((i think i bumped it on the j-8 shot):

canon, f11 (you can see in this series how scattered clouds slightly altered shadows, highlights), focus on the target square, which literally had been a target for my .45/70 single shot rifle:

now, if one of you guys knows how to turn this into a side-by-side thing, and compare some crops, please do so. i don't have the know-how ...

What amazes me most is:

1) In the first series, how (comparatively) bad the Jupiter is, and how good the Industar (but both a long way from the Canon)

2) how different the contrast is with the Industar. I think I noticed this also with mine (but I don't have it that long yet and didn't use it much yet).

the j-8, because it focuses so quickly and slickly, is easily nudged out of focus - or aperture choice. i think a thicker lube and a shim might cure the focus issue. a couple of photos i posted an hour or so ago in w/nw were shot with the j-8. the one of the trash can is eerily sharp. my oxidation shots with the jup were eerily sharp. but i think the canon is the overall winner ...

The 1st shots of the chevy's emblem wasn't quite fair because you shot the I 50 at it's widest aperture of 3.5. You didn't shoot the J-8 or the Canon lens at their widest aperture & you should have!

Hey! I just saw the two shots you took of your mother on the W/NW Families with both the I50 & Canon 50/1:8 wide open. Those two shots were fantastic!

thanks, greg. i'd use the i-50 even more if it weren't a pain to TTL meter on the bessa. with my numbish fingerptips, i just cannot feel it well. and it is soooooo tiny. it is lovely to use with a handheld meter, though.

here is the gear, by the way, shot with my little fuji finepix j10 p&s:

the i-50 sports a shade made from a piece of an ilford plastic film can; tip came from a fellow photog; no vignetting, by the way ...

Paul that's a nice kit. The Canon 50/1.8 looks to be an awesome lens. I have a silver Bessa R & I guess it's my small fingers but I prefer the I-50 over my J-8. Haven't figured what it is about the J-8 that doesn't feel right to me. The I-61LD & the J-3 which is a 50/1.5 are my two favorite 50's. I was suprised how good the I-50 was with b&w & today I used it on the R with some Ektar 100 color, so we'll see how well it renders color!

it is a nifty, nifty little lens. mine was a gift, and is well used. the front element is covered in tiny, tiny blems and scritches that can be seen under a magnifying glass, but it nevertheless takes a good picture. it absolutely loves snow in bw400cn. it was my first lens to CLA, and it turned out well. but man, the extra speed on that canon is great ...
