A new approach to raising funds.

Payment sent - feels good to support the site.

I will be interested to see how the Salon Club responds....

cash is all going to the hosting facility. They will be managing the site on a new server with oolas of memory and INTEL processing power.

RFF is a great site that deserves member support.

Is there some sort of verification after payment? When we donate, how will we know if our status changes?

I think that since you've implemented this it might be a good idea to increase the amount of viewing space at the Gallery, more Recent Uploads, more Random Pics, more Recent Comments. Is that possible?

Ray, who is that inh your avatar

It's Phil Hartman from SNL, as 'Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer' I recently discovered the SNL transcripts site, where you can read the scripts from SNL skits going back to the first year.

It's an ugly avatar, I know, but a hilarious skit!

🙂

I'm not looking for a subscriber icon, just some verification. I doubt I'll ever upload 20 photos in a day, my main purpose for donating is supporting the site. I donated to RFF last year and never received a reply from the site, not an e-mail, nothing. I donated 30 minutes ago and still haven't received a notification. No big deal, really. Just kind of nice to close the loop.

I know what you mean and I was merely kidding about the icon..well...almost.. 🙂
I subscribed 15 minutes ago and I got a confirmation email sent to me from paypal.

Sounds fair. I'll pay right away! ($25 is really cheap when you compare it with how much time and money it will cost me to be able to upload 20 pics a day 🙂 )

I shall pay gladly $25 for a membership, no question.

I am not sure if the moment is well chosen to ask for money as with the actual problems reliabilty and accessibility of the gallery is questionnable. Why pay for something you cannot count on?

I think, paying members should get more privileges or - non paying members should get more restrictions.

Done. [rant=on] This fund drive could not come at a worse possible time for me, and I'm not 100% happy with the way things are run [/rant], but I have gleaned a lot more than $25 worth from this resource, so there ya go. Hopefully lots of people will sign up.

Frankly, though, I have trouble figuring out why the site's wealthy sponsors can't cough up some more cash. After all, I'm pretty sure their business has greatly increased due to their strategic banner placements. Rob the rich, not the poor! 😀

As soon as I have $25 actually in my bank account, I'll subscribe. . . . I hope lots of people do subscribe so that there is enough money to really do things as well as possible. More bandwidth. . . .
Me too - although I doubt that I will use the gallery much I would like to support the site as much as possible.

I never post to the gallery.

But I'm worried that this will become a two tier group with the 'subscribers' looking down on the 'ordinary members'.

And yes, the advertisers who are constanly fawned upon get good business from this site and could easily cover the costs.

Jon, except for those members who haven't customized their titles (a minority I think), is there any way to tell a "premium member" from an "ordinary member"? It seems rather low-key to me, unlike Photo.net where there's a gaudy little color ikon attached to your posts.... 🙂

I think the site is worth supporting with a few sheckles to thank the people running/moderating it and to have it run optimally on a server that will cope. This also helps the moderators who are meant to be reading almost every post - imagine their frustration on a really slow site....

I sent a modest amount to Jorge when RFF were chipping in for Joe a while back. Ironically, I was frustrated in several attempts to get funds to Joe for the ZI (I was a Paypal dunce, and missed going via another member).

So yeah , I think its worth chipping in, but I also think "financial suppporter" status icons are unnecessary and counter-productive - might lead to a "you can't comment because you aren't financial" or somesuch nonsense.
