This would indeed be cool. Medium-format digital, though, has been something of a dud. On all cameras You get increased DOF control as you get to 24x36, but then lenses start slowing down maximum aperture. On digital, that hurts low-light performance - and then there is the problem that MF sensors don't draw the R&D money. One thing is for sure - it would be $3-4K minimum. For six months, at least. 🙂

We need a body roadmap chart from Fuji, like their lens roadmap.
I am not buying any more lenses until I see what's in the future for the XE / Xpro body lines. If they are going to die, that's going to be a big decision point for me.

Back on topic: a fixed lens MF digital rangefinder??? --- $7000USD

That would be less than 1 Leica S system lens costs.

Dante is onto the issue with MF.
Medium format is great if the lenses are fast enough to enhance DOF control vs 24x36.
In order to make a fixed lens MF body the lens is going to be quite slow or quite large.

True. Even at full freight, the X100T has the best value proposition of any Fuji. All the good things about the X-T1, with a tiny, killer lens, with much better flash usability -- and without the cosmetic baggage, weight, or bulk.

I fear the problem of digital MF is more in the lenses than the sensors. Wide angles in MF have never been the best performing lenses and from what we see happening in digital 24x36 it are the lenses that need a bigger redesign than the sensors. Sensors outresolve lenses. And the volumes aren't there in MF. We're going to pixel peep at 100%, not just print to the same size as we did with film.

But otherwise I agree, a digital 645Zi would be awesome. With a 45-120 f/4 lens.
 
Hope they'll drop an FF camera at least with a decent AF system... Fuji has lots of great camera I can't understand why they don't make an FF one... 😛
 
Sorry a bit of rambling. 🙁 .. Jamie's post got me started 😀 😛

I remember a while back there was a rumor about them using a 50ish mp 645 Sony sensor in regards to creating a mf type of camera.

While nothing in the digital world will ever do what the xpan did..that is a set of lenses that covered up to mf image circle w/ at times heavy vignetting but had the ability w/ a sliding film gate to shoot normal 35mm or pano by expanding the film gate up to 62mm across, thus proving mode usable film area.

Stitching or pano sweep functions are a close approximation but as all have said at cost of seeing issues w/ moving objects as well as needing sw corrections to handle the nodal related distortions after stitching is complete.

The only other alternative is in-camera crop otherwise we are doing crop during editing. Currently the only cameras w/ in-camera crop that I am aware of are the Sigma DP Quattro series w/ their 21:9 aspect ratio support at cost of less mp of course, but u get to c what u get.

I have never been a fan of sweep pano, but use it on occasion. If no moving objects, I tend to do multi stitch in PS or just crop in post. I plan to get the Sigma DP0 eventually and use it as my digital Xpan given it has the 21:9 aspect ratio and 21 fov lens.

I wish Fuji would add a pano aspect ratio one day maybe w/ this mf size sensor they may just do that.

For me.. My wish is for Fuji to give me a monochrome sensor (no filter array, no aa filter) on an xp/xe/xt family camera. While a mf size Fuji would be nice, it is just not something I would buy these days.

I think it's a bit premature to say MF digital is a "dud" because the lenses are slower and you have less DOF control. How much more (less!) DOF do you need??

There's more to MF lenses than just short DOF. Besides which, to my eye, there's more subject isolation and 3D-ness to an image on 4x5 with a lens at f/8, than on 35mm with a lens at f/2. That's partially due to the sharpness/detail rendered at f/8 on a large piece of film with longer focal lengths for a given field of view.

A digital 6x7 sensor, especially one that could be glommed onto the back of many 6x7 cameras, would be pretty awesome, to me at least. But a fixed-lens camera would be a start.

I like a lot of Fuji's older cameras but the X-series and all newer models are a complete snore to me as they are.
