I have used my SB15 with my D40 and D300. It is actually officially compatible if you check Nikon's data.
TTL mode won't work (you just get full power output since digital Nikons use iTTL, not the old TTL system) but the auto modes work well. It doesn't see much action these days since I've moved on to more modern speedlights, but it helped me take many pictures.
