Hi everybody,
opening my Summitar (year 1949) I found a number inside the body (738): can anybody say what is it for?
Look at the pics, thank you

Do you think so? There is the serial number to recognize the lens... A secret numer inside the lens...Hmm... Now I open my reflex Canon and write something in the back of the mirror!! :) Joking... It's possible...

That's very much in the style the number would be written in when the lens was made.

Does it happen to be the last 3 digits of the serial number?

Leica often marked that on the focusing helical, since it has to match the focal length of the lens, which varies from sample to sample.

My Summicron has the actual focal length marked on the inside.

Just curious, how did u open the lens ? Just un-srew the head of the lens ? My Summitar seems to be very tightened.

Yes, they are the last three digits of the serial number!
This is nice... It means that every single lens was tested and calibrated , one by one... Good job!
I opened the lens while I was cleaning it, I didn't know they were two pieces screwed up, I simply unscrew them ...

Ciao
