a question of taste

and thank you, benjamin marks, for your opinion on this matter.

i think the mature button is the perfect application for this issue. i have so marked my gallery profile.

there are two sides to what some of you are calling censorship: those who want to see a subject, and those who do not. those who do not should not have to continually confronted with the subject in question. those who want to see the subject should be able to do so. a simple click by a poster wanting to show the subject is the answer. in my view, nudity is one of those subjects. so is gore for the sake of shock.

one more thing, for you dads with daughters: do you want guys like us ogling your naked children? under any conditions?

hey, i'm just sayin' ...

Your intent is to control a site based on your religious beliefs. That is apparent for all to see. It is also easy to see that you have issues with nudity and sex. That is for you to work out yourself.

I know there are some members here who are also members of Nikon Cafe. A few years ago, several religious members raised a huge stink over the site having a nude forum. Mind you, this was not nude photos popping up in a general gallery, but a separate forum devoted to nudes in which one had to click on that forum to view the photos. That was not good enough for those against any type of nude photography. They wanted the nude forum banned altogether, to make the place more family oriented, whatever the hell that means. Well, a huge fight broke out and the religious zealots got their wish. The result? Many, many , many talented photographers, even those who do not shoot nudes, left by the droves over the censorship of one of the oldest forms of photography known to man.

In the end, the place became boring and vanilla. Not so much because nude photography was not allowed but because many creative photographers, of all kinds, left.

Diversity is the spice of life.

My point exactly. If that was all we are then our Republican party would already have a candidate for President.

Besides, I watch Top Gear on cable TV.

Over here Top Gear gets attacked for it's lack of political correctness anyway ... it's probably always a mistake to comment on another societies mores.

Surely that people agree to mark up any photos that could be construed as 'mature' as mature on upload. People who then want to filter these can use the suggested tickbox to avoid these photos. Sounds like a win/win to me.

Somebody, forgive me for not going back to check who, proposed an excellent idea with regard to the mature filter.
I have no internet technology knowledge whatsoever so this may be an issue of cost and/or time etc but should it be a possibility I would fully agree with the idea that all uploaded photographs are automatically tagged as 'mature content.' We, whilst in the uploading process, must manually switch this to 'non-mature content' thereby making it harder for any potentially undesirable images to be viewed.
An extra 'click' for most of us but this would then enable those that do not wish to view such images to browse the gallery without having the chance of stumbling across something they deem to be unsuitable.

P.S. The 'angel' above is not intended to imply whether I have or have not (a) Faith :p;)

Paul, I have no problem tagging any of my photos as mature content. I'm not here to offend anyone or to be made to feel as if I'm exploiting women either.

Nobody pointed any out, showed examples or wrote a list....so I tagged just about anything with a stocking or a heel....no big deal.

Some say you haven't passed judgement on anyone but unfortunately the title of the thread did that, even before the hello.

If anyone else has a problem with any of my photos just pm me. I'm quite a reasonable person.

Personally I don't think any form of porn should be posted, that includes nudes, no matter how "tasteful" or "artistic" they are perceived to be. If its not exploitation its titillation at the very least and has no place in a serious photographic website such as this. There are plenty of magazines, books and of course galleries and sex shops (adult entertainment venues) around if one really needs to look at this stuff. Don't forget that dirty raincoat. BTW I don't do religion, so my views have nothing to do with what god may think. Guess am one of those politically correct dinosaur throwbacks from 1970's-80's activism. Maybe if there were more women here opinions would be more robust on this issue.

They drove most of the women away years ago, don't worry.

rick, i have clearly stated i have set my faith aside to discuss this issue.
i asked for censorship ONLY FOR MYSELF. i have ticked the appropriate box.
this does not and will not affect anyone else who may or may not want to see nudes that pop up in the gallery.
i also stated clearly that should members here not mark their mature photos so i cannot see them, it is OK by me. i will not protest, nor will i take my basketball and go home. :)

I haven't seen Paul even vaguely suggest that nudes and mature content be banned. It's ridiculous to accuse him of that.

I'm an atheist and a bit of a libertine and have no concerns about kids or bosses seeing nipples on my screen (hurray for being self-employed). But I get why some people might take issue - in other contexts, it's just good form to mark things as NSFW so that readers don't get in trouble or put in awkward situations.

Ideally, it can be self-policed by uploaders.

I do. I am pretty sure that if he could have his choice, he would ban nude photography completely on this site. It offends his religious beliefs.

Rick, that is a huge stretch. I know Paul personally, and you are misreading this thread. Maybe it is because of the keyboard communication or whatever, but Paul is NOT wanting to infringe on anyone's enjoyment, participation or anything else.

He has far too much class and is far more sophisticated than that.

IMO, the answer is already there. Let's stop beating a dead horse.

I don't know Paul from Adam, but he made my photo of a pole-dancing, undead monkey one of his pics of the week so he's clearly not that uptight. Agree with you 100%.

The gallery upload has the following text:
Does this image contain 'mature content'?
Mature content cannot be seen by non-members visiting the site.

It obviously cannot be a perfect filter. Something which would be considered 'mature content' in one country/culture is not necessarily 'mature content' in another one. Much is left for the individual to judge, and the best filter in the end is for anyone to ignore what they wish to not see.

Even though I have the filter "on", I don't feel I can share this website with my grandchildren. One of them is a budding photographer but until she is an adult, I hope she never sees this website. That is a shame because otherwise it is very good site for creative photography.

Don't wake the gear hound in her?

Don't wake the gear hound in her?

while the nudes here are almost all juvenile titillation, I would indeed be a lot more worried about exposing my children to the crass consumerism rampant here than yet another oiled, half-shadowed boob in front of a half-drawn window curtain.
