When people talk about the 105mm lens (Ai or AI-s) that is so fantastic for sharpness and wonderful bokeh, are they talking about the 2.5 or the micro 2.8? Thanks. Which one is more desirable or renowned?

The RF and early SLR verison of the 105/2.5 -- the later SLR version was redesigned for portrait-distance sharpness and so also is very highly regarded. No experience with the 2.8 version.

This is the SLR version, even this coffeenol developed hp5 can’t hide its’ class, I have a Nikkormat just so I can use that lens

My 105mm f2.5 (the old Sonnar type ) has been with me for nearly forty years!, and is my favourite, the surprise to me was how well it took to digital use!.

Most people are referring to the 105mm F2.5, all versions. The Sonnar version was made from the 1950's through the 1970s, the Planar version up until recently. Both are highly regarded, the latter one is "maybe" sharper. I can't tell and I have several of each.
I also have the 105/2.8 AF-Micro-Nikkor. it is extremely sharp, but I only use it for macro work.

I find the one with most pleasing 'keh and, in my opinion, lens appearance is the Nikon-P 105/2.5, i just never get on well with the AI appearance haha.

my wife has an AIS 105/2.5. i think it's a later (planar) version. it's her favorite lens. here is a shot of hers that i love with it:

Either one is a stellar lens. The older version came in LTM, S and F mounts. I've had the LTM and now have the S and love it. I have the new in F (AIS to be specific) and like it but it does not see a lot of use these days.

Sorry to hijack, but at least it's a comparison hijack! How does the 135/2.8AI compare?
The 135/2.8 AI series is a Planar formula lens, 5 elements. It never acheived the fame and popularity of the 105. That is one Nikkor lens that I have never owned. The earlier 135/2.8 Nikkor-Q and QC was a 4-element Sonnar formula lens. It is not as sharp as the 105/2.5 Sonnar or Planar.

I have the 105mm 2.5 Ai version...it hasn't seen too much light lately...Guess I'll give it a go, again...I forget it's there...Thanks for the reminder...
