A question on L and R3a

The only thing the batteries power on the Bessa L is the meter. It will work at any speed.

The R3a, with its electronic shutter, is a paperweight without batteries.

Does the shutter work without batteries? Thanks.

L, R, R2 and T shutters all work without batterie because of beeing mechanical.
LR44 is for the metering only.

R2a/R3a are electronic shutters, NO hybrids AFAIK, which means they have no mecanical emergency option like the Nikon FM. No battery no sex. :bang:

In any case, it's really not too difficult to carry around a spare set of batteries, either 2 SR44 cells, or a single CR1/3N lithium cell. They are pretty tiny and would fit in a coin purse easily.

Great idea, Rick. Especially when you have to make a living with your cameras, as you do. It's not like you can say, "Oh well, batteries packed it in. Guess I'll shoot the train wreck tomorrow."

Speaking of batteries, I was in Peddler's Alley today shooting a street person with his dog with a cat on its back, and on the cat's back were two white mice. The menagerie's owner said it took him 18 months to train them. Anyway, tourists are in awe and snap away with their digitals. Of course he has an upturned straw hat on the sidewalk into which they toss money. We know each other, and so I was photographing the whole scene with my new Zorki 4K - first roll (with the cool-looking Sonnar aluminum lens hood on the J8), when one of the tourists asked what kind of batteries my camera took.

"It's not a digital camera," I said. "Doesn't need batteries." I could see this technical discussion was way over his head.

But it's good to know that my Bessas R and L will keep on truckin' without batteries. I guess I should read their manuals more often. Like maybe just once.
