A Rough Emulation of Epson B&W

I'm currently working on a project shot with four different cameras (two Epsons and two Canon DSLRs). In order to have a some consistency in the look of the final B&W files, I've been experimenting with ways to match the look of the B&W files made by PhotoRAW (from ERF). It's not exact, but I can get a pretty close match using Epson color files (conv. from ERF in PhotoRAW) and setting the channel mixer in PS CS to Red 30, Green 40, Blue 30. Obviously, the Canon color files have a different look to them but, when converted to B&W using this recipe, they seem to match fairly well with the Epson files.

FYI, in case someone else finds that useful.

That is very useful info Sean.... ... thanks!
For some reasons, no matter how i convert, my Canon files do not have the subtle, broad range of tonalities i get from the Epson files.

Hi Han,

That's true and much of it comes down, I think, to the different ways RF lenses draw their images on a sensor. And the R-D1 sensor itself, not surprisingly, draws more like a Nikon than a Canon. What I need to do, though, is to be able to present a client with a final set of pictures that flow well together - even though the actual drawing between the cameras is different. So, it was helpful to get the Canon conversions to look somewhat like the Epson ones. That said, one can't make a duck into a goose and vice-versa.

Cheers,

Sean
