a sense of place?

I really enjoy this image, Roland. What was this shot with?

Nope. It's subjective ("A sense of place"), by definition. So the way you tell the story is all yours.

Thanks on the photo feedback, guys.

franswa, this was shot with a 35 Summicron on Rollei Retro 100 in Rodinal. It's a child's grave at the Rhyolite Cemetery.

so what does a 'sense of place' mean to you...?

to pinpoint that exact 'place' on a map?

or to get a 'sense' of what that place is like?

To me it means, what the place "feels" like, Joe; the most important thing about my land/city/people-scapes. Another one, I've shown before (and that has caused much debate :) )

Great thread. Cheers,

I would but I honestly don't think any of my images capture a sense of place in the way I define it. I've been trying to do so for awhile now since moving to the Pacific Northwest but I don't think I've quite got it yet. I'm not saying the images that have been posted are bad by any means.

I'd argue that later. I think Turtle said it best.

Here's an image of my own. To me and the friends that were with me at the time it may evoke a sense of place during a tiny sliver of time, but to the rest of you I doubt it.

Why do you sell the image short. Many of us have memories of being in a place similar to your photo. For me, the Canadian Rockies, Pacific Northwest, Northern Cal forests, and Smoky Mountains are all brought back vividly when I see this. That is the power of photographic images.

Darling Harbour (Sydney). There's a lot to see there, but I think this is a good summary.

PS I'm leaving for the week end, no time to write more, I'll add more comments next week.

Well, at least we don't have the Eiffel Tower photos. Or the Matterhorn.:p

I am still waiting for photos of the sense of place in the family. Paulfish had a good one recently of a four generation spread in his family. Talk about a sense of place!

How about this one, Dave, and maybe not what you expected, my parents:

A "sense of place" in several ways, for me .... every photo reveals something about the photographer ....
