just a quick post on some image comparison....
between Epson V700 with AntiNewtonRing Glass,
Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 and the Minolta Scan
Dual 3200 (in a fit of madness, I ordered 4 SD3200,
all between 100 - 150usd, with the logic that not all
will survive the journey to Singapore, postage is expensive,
I am just reviewing the first one that arrived yesterday).

All captured on 3200 dpi,
All 8-bit greyscale
Brightness either 0.5 in vuescan
or auto in Epson Scan.
Sharpening is Med by default in Epsonscan,
in Vuescan I turned on sharpening.

First of all, the Epson V700 with ANR glass,

Next is the Minolta 3200 with Sharpening turned on.

The next example is the Scan Elite 5400 with Sharpening turned on.

Lastly, I decided that sharpening was too sharp, I tested to test
the Minolta Scan Elite 5400 with Sharpening turned off.

Conclusion:

So far, the winner seem to be the Minolta Scan Elite 5400, even
without sharpening, the images it produces are very sharp,
down to the emulsion pattern. Next is the Minolta Scan Dual 3200,
the images aren't as fine as the 5400, but neither does it hurt my
eyes when I stare as the picture.

Scan without the sharpening, it ruins film scans. I only sharpen after resizing an image down for printing or web display, and then I save the file under a new name so i can keep the original archived without sharpening. I agree on the 5400, the other two look horrid. The 5400 gives the same kind of natural grain look I get from my Nikon 8000ED.

5400 is the best (most natural) out of the ones you posted.

But for crying out loud, turn OFF the sharpening everywhere in the toolchain.

my feeble eyes detect that dual Scan IV no.2 is a tad sharper than than
DUal Scan IV no.1. I also think that Dual Scan IV with sharpening looks
abit like Scan ELite 5400 without sharpening, no ?
