A Small M6 Problem

I think Leica used to sell film extensions to make up for this- you added the extension to the tail of the cassette, then loaded and wound on to #1. Don't think they are still in the catalog- but they turn up on ebay every once in a while.😉

I like you too! You may have a point - it probably does get tiring.

It does, and it is so predictable! IMO it rather takes away from the value of anything else you post.

For the OP, I am wondering if this is the plastic frame counter problem...you might check with a qualified repair person...

Magus, as the original poster, I should say I read your comments and and thought them mildly humerous and moved on. No offense taken or even thought about.

Meanwhile, I think I'll keep my idiosynchratic M6 as it is so that when it shows36 it really means "That's all" — 38 and out.

The early M6's inherited the frame counter mechanism from the M4-P, but after a while they changed it to make it less expensive to produce. Contrary to popular myth it has nothing to do with a plastic part, it's a different setup and the screw that stops the counter wheel when it resets tends to back out. The cure is a reverse-threaded screw, which Leica incorporated eventually and which is retrofit if one of the previous counters goes bad. OTOH the last of the classics had a better straplug attachment (2 screws that prevent any chance of rotation, vs the previous single rivet), and better shutter light traps (folded mylar vs felt strips), so not all costcutting measures resulted in a drop in reliability. (The foregoing courtesy of a conversation with DAG some time ago).

Nothing personal, but you kind of proved my point about ruining the thread. If you scroll back through this thread you'll notice that your comment incited more posts based on that than what the original post was about (I'm guilty as well). If you look at just about every M6 thread on this forum somewhere in there you make a comment about how bad the M6 is. It doesn't offend me at all, but it gets tiring beyond belief. Everyone is entitled to their opinion (obviously), but when you keep hearing the same exact opinion even in a joking manner it becomes iritating.

Do you want my opinion? A close friend of mine has an M3 DS in mint condition passed down from his father. I did a side by side comparison with my M6. Personally, I felt the M3 seemed a little weak next to the M6. I feel the M6 is a better built and designed camera. Now how would you all like to hear me state that opinion in every single M3 post?

To sum up:

1. Magus, it's OK to say whatever you like since there will be no repercussions. You have no physical address, residing in "The Internet" where you should be safe. 🙂

2. My M6 has not moved, still showing -2 after two loading frames, ready to spring into action should I stop firing off the Sony A100 long enough to give the Leica some exercise. Actually, I'm displeased with the local camera shop and am punishing them by withholding film processing. I usually ask for C-41 processing, develop only and do not cut negs. They charge me about $2.25 for this service about once a week. Missing my business should really cripple their whole operation.

3. At times like these, when I get disgusted with photography, I increase my bike milage. It's healthier, too.
