A thinner half case for the R-D1?

Kansas. OMG. Kansas.
My RD1 lives inside a hefty black Luigi case with built in grip. This is a very solid, fairly thick case. I like it since it’s gorgeous AND it protects the camera. But…

… I recently got me a very fine, thin-leather case for my M7 (also made by Luigi). This case adds almost no bulk at all to the camera, it seems. So, I wonder, is there a similar, thin-leather case for the RD1? I did look into the Epson case but don’t like its design.

Because I checked his website and saw no such case for the RD1. Thanks anyway 🙂

As someone here said: It's a good thing Luigi is so much better at making leather goods than designing a web site. Ask him - I'm always coming across stuff he makes that isn't on the web site. I wouldn't take it to be the final authority on what is or isn't available from him.

You may be right, I just emailed Luigi.

Luigi responded to my inquiry and offered to make one using the thinner leather. The cost would be the same as the RD1 cases currently available for sale on his website, if understand his website prices correctly.

please let us know how this turns out. your idea sounds good. i'm interested in hearing about the final product. quick question: what case color do you think is best for the R-D1? i know luigi makes various colors--black, brown, tan, etc.

Will do. I plan to order one in "Rally" color (see below, Luigi's graphic) but it was between that color and black.

All of the colors in the chart below are available. And then some! Plus, Luigi is always accomodating and can fulfill special requests. He is special!

Well, change of plans. While cleaning out the RD1 storage box I found a brand new FM-GRIP from Photo-Equip USA, still unmodified to fit the RD1. Since the bulkiness of the camera and associated handholding comfort have really become an issue for me, I've decided to 1st try to use the metal grip and let the RD1 "run naked" for a while, see how it works out. While I am all for protecting the camera body, the ability to comfortably hold the RD1 wins out. So that's my story and I am sticking to it, at least for now 🙂

What a strange end of this topic.

Huh? Why strange? It makes perfect sens to me - I went from wanting something thinner to the thinnest possible while preserving the grip. Totally logical if you ask me... I bet chances are a thinner case for the RD1 will be made sooner or later.

Are you saying the Photo-Equip FM grip fits the R-D1 without modification?

The FM grip needs some simple filing of bottom edges before it can be attached to the RD1. There are a couple of threads here on this forum showing what needs to be done. At least one RFF'er also installed leather-like covering of the grip and it sure looks like it would be very comfortable to hold.

My half case...

My half case...

What do you think about my hand made half leather case?
Thinner or not?

I'm also working in a new half case...
