A total putdown...of me!!!!

It's funny... been following the DSLR cinema scene on a few blogs. DSLRs with their 24/720p capabilities and DOF control are making strong advances in the Indy film making scene... It seems to me that there are all kinds of expensive this/that's to make the cameras bigger and bulkier with the sole purpose - IMO- to look more "professional" like a huge Panavision camera. Thankfully, this same mindset didn't apply to cell phones...

Oh - and PS. If the kid was a real pro he would have had at least one back-up body ready to go - along with several charged batteries. It was probably the owner's nephew.
 
About 7 years ago my daughter, who was then working for a charity, volunteered me to shoot a charity run they were sponsoring. When I talked to the man in charge and told him what I would be bringing (film cameras and lenses), he asked me if I didn't have digital. He didn't want me to shoot because he wanted digital. I was only a little miffed as I wasn't particularly anxious to tangle with a bunch of tired runners and their enthusiastic supporters.

But I know how you felt. I was a little put off myself by the implication that I must not know anything since I didn't have digital; but happy not to do the gig anyway. No matter what I got, he wouldn't have been happy.
 
🙂Not trying to be a "Debby Downer" but be careful beating up on the kid with the 5 year old dslr. He might take killer pictures with his old out of date camera. It seems like the bait shop owner was off kilter. He probably did not know your knowledge of photography or the latest digital gear. He was also probably nervous about his big opening.

ON second thought, screw him and that kid! Sony's Rule!:angel:

The guy doesn't get how little camera size has to do with image quality.
But he's not a photographer, so why should he?

Furthermore, would you trust him to appreciate what you would have produced? even if he let you?

It's not even worth your time to get upset over this.

Now get yourself an F3 with MD4, last time I used that to cover a rally, people look at me with respect 😛 😀

on a related note, on my last 2 fishing outings, the guides had cameras, but totally cheapo digicams. I didn't even want to be photographed with them, but some of the catch was huge, and the the guides really insisted, so I let them.

When shooting at gallery openings with my M8, ocasionally I would get asked why I was taking photographs. One woman (absolute ball breaker) in particular demanded to know who I was and why I had just photographed her and was about to make a real scene when I pointed out to her that I was there professionally and if she didn't like being photographed she could leave!

Wander around with a 'hulking great DSLR' (Roger's description) and there's no problems ... ever!

If I ever get my little Fuji X100 I may go back to being challenged occasionally I suspect! 😀

Thats exactly what I want people to think when I'm doing my street photography 🙂

Bummer for pros tho. They need a massive noisy kit that says "I got this covered, please take a card and move out of the way".
There was a guy in another forum asking for advice on what is a cheap flash that looks pro. Later he clarified he doesnt want to use it, he just wants it on the camera 😀
 
I find it's no problem to show with a nex and some lenses. If you are booked, it's expected you know what you are doing.

On the otherhand if you just happen to be standing there, who knows?

You only open your business once. Why take a chance?

Of course the business guy did take a chance in the first place with his first photographer--he's the one who really feels bad.

Think of the one-armed gal, she must get some sideways glances. Obviously doesn't stop her. What did she shoot with?
 
Well, every story have two sides. The owner don't know anything about photography and hires and trust the guy. May be some of his friends recommended the canon man and he went for it. Then you appear but how on earth he would know you are a photographer. I would send you off as well.
IMO The age has little to do with photography - the kiddo may be makes really pictures with his canon. Many people does...
If I were you I would bring my portfolio in case they'll need a photographer again. If you are far better than the kid next time they'll call you.

Did the one armed photog tell any fishing stories? 'The one I lost was at least THIS long!'

The orig photog did not have a backup camera but there was a backup photog.... That is planning ahead.
 
I have a solution Akiva. Get an old DSLR and zoom and hollow them out out so they weigh next to nothing and hang that rig around your neck. 😀
