A total putdown...of me!!!!

The reaction of the shop owner is somehow understandable. He hired someone and now it's the turn of that person to solve the problem, and he did. If a person like you comes up and you offer your service then he probably thinks about all the price discounts you probably might ask for when you buy in his shop in the future.

You have renided me of a strange incident quite some years ago. Took my film to a lab I had use many times and was asked if I were an amateur. I said yes ( I had never been asked that by any lab ). My prints came back and every one had got the same colour cast.

I took them back and showed them to someone at the lab who took them to the boss. Poor assistant came back looking sheepish and quoted the boss: "They're good enough for an amateur".

Foolish because I knew lots of pro and amateur photgraphers but I said nothing to them. I use another very respectful lab and have done so ever since.

The comments about perception are spot on. At an "official" event people expect an "official" camera. That's a moving target. Once it was a Speed Graphic with a flash reflector and bulbs, then an F2 with a flash bracket and a Metz. Now it's a large DSLR with a speedlight. Joe public expects that. People with capable equipment which doesn't fit the common perception don't get taken seriously. If you're touting for work that can be a problem. Most people confuse equipment with results.
