I kept the Canon 35/1.8 but sold the 35/2. I have a 35/2 Summicron and 35/1.5 pre-asph as general purpose lenses, with the Canon 35/1.8 and Canon 35mm/1.5 as special purpose lenses.

Yes, the Canon 35/2 is a general purpose lens. It is very sharp,and it is very well built. I needed cash to save for a Lux, so the Canon had to go. Mine was never used stock.

And it seems to be enjoying renewed favor, too, since the price seems to have risen recently. From the shots I've seen posted here at RFF and over at flickr, the 35/2 does indeed seem to be a sharp lens, but I think I prefer the somewhat less contrasty look from the 35/1.8. I posted a WLB on that lens...

I was looking for one of these instead of a Summicron, but felt that prices over $400 seemed quite steep and a bit unreasonable. I instead came across a great deal on a pre-aspheric Summilux in the classifieds. Man, I am in love with that lens!

Steve, Raid,

I'd be interested in other comments. I, too, have both the f2 and the f1.8, for a fluke of timing. I was going to sell the 1.8 because of its low contrast when I noticed it seemed to have a real 3D look to it (not trying to start the usual 3D can't exist in a 2D photo, it must be an artifact of lighting, etc or related discussion here -- just saying) that the f2 did not.

Raid, what led you to sell the f2 and keep the 1.8, and for what special purpose?

Yes, it's precisely the combination of lower contrast, faster speed, and sharpness that interests me in the 35/1.8. Still looking... but, papgow, if you change your mind about selling yours, pm me! 🙂
