A Trip Home

I had to take a trip home to Victoria Canada (I have to leave the US every year in order to renew my status). That gives me an opportunity to take some snaps of the local sights and of my family and REALLY put my new 35RC to the test! I brought a roll of Ektar 100, Reala 100, Portra 160NC and TMAX 100. Try to guess which is which.

I couldn't wait to see the results from the new Ektar so I processed the negs and got prints locally. I thought it was a reputable place but they really brutalized the negs. Booo.

Another issue I had was with the yellow filter I bought from tripman.co.uk... it's pretty much a plastic filter so some of the results weren't as sharp as I would've liked. But finding 43.5mm filters is tough. But out of all of the films the Portra blew me away the most - I didn't have much experience with it but when I saw some of the results I thought "THIS is why I shoot film".

That one (of my sister) is actually Ektar 100. the 7th, 8th and 9th image are of Portra.

I'm a fan of Portra NC, I love those fine, subdued colors, like in an old painting.

Hmm... must check that yellow filter I just bought from Tripman. Is it that bad really?

I had used Portra NC before but I was using my V500's Epson software which isn't ideal. I could finally scan properly with VueScan (to some degree I guess, there are quirks with the program) but the colors were all quite pleasing.

As for the filter, it just struck me that it gave the images a tiny bit of a soft focus which wasn't really what I wanted in the slightest. I had to crank up some of the sharpness, but I guess it wouldn't be too noticble on a standard 4x6 print.

I was kind of underwhelmed by the Ektar, but like I said the negs were pretty beaten up. Boooo.

I metered the Ektar at 100 by the way.

I like these alot. Great 3D effect in some. The Oly RC really is very capable for such a humble machine (the photographer's ability helps too!). Well done.

thanks guys. i really love the camera. one thing the shots i took really demonstrated was the dynamic range of film. in the following shots i was thinking to myself "oh great, the sky is bright and hazy, it's going to be totally white in the shot isn't it?". and based on my experience with my little digital point and shoot, that very much would've been the case. BUT with film I got some wonderful hues and tones in the sky.

the little digital point and shoot i have is gathering dust. although it's pretty good for shooting video on the fly while inebriated.

I too love the whole look of this shot...

Ektar 100...??? I might have to give it an honest try...
To run a roll through the Yashica Mat 124...sounds like fun...😀
