Hi

I'm very happy with my V500 but have a question which will probably highlight that I am doing something wrong. When scanning big old negs (6 x 9 etc) these can sometimes get cropped even though I have specified the format in 'configure'. I haven't found a way round this...any ideas?

Next question is more general. If you had some terrible old, dirty 35mm negs from the 60s with drying marks and everything on them, is there anything to be gained from re-washing them?

Thanks in advance

Michael

I find that MF negatives are often cropped with the Epson software. Part of the negative is cut off. This doesn't happen with Vuescan, which is why I use it instead of the Epson software. Now, I'm using the Better Scanning holders, as well.

I have rewashed negatives to remove dirt and other deposits. No problem. If you can put them on a reel it will reduce the chance of scratching while the emulsion is soft. I would wash them for about 20 minutes in 65-70 deg. water, quick dip in Photoflo, and hang to dry. Should be fine.

possibly gained and possibly lost...

As bsdunek noted, care should be taken to avoid scratching or otherwise damaging the negs while they are wet. If the images are valuable then I suggest that you get a good scan of the images in their current state before attempting to clean them. That way if damage occurs during washing/cleaning you still have the scans to work with.

I wouldn't recommend rewashing older films. "Modern" films from the late '40s on should be reasonably safe to rewash provided you know standard film processing procedures. Older films can be very soft and possibly partially decomposed. With these, problems occuring during a re-wash (i.e. emulsion releasing from the base, ...) are much more likely.

I only use pro mode on the V500. No Thumbnail preview, just draw up your own frames. Works a treat, the size of the negative can be whatever. I´ve even done 6x17 without film holder, works too. In fact I suspect the lens focuses better on film straight on the glass, than once lifted by the film holder.

Thanks to all. I'm very happy with the scanner, its bundled software and of course its price. Seems to do just what I want.

The tip about turning thumbnails off is much appreciated

Michael

I recommend you not to wash them. It is too late, if you think that they are not thoroughly rinsed in the first place. Scan them and store the negatives dark in a dry place.

I use red-ethanol (clean fuel ethanol) which I wet a cotton cloth with. I then quickly just wipes the water marks and dust away. Do it softly, no force, as you may scratch the negatives. It works fine on thumb-marks also!

I works perfectly. The negatives should not be wet with ethanol, just quickly wiped. They dries very quickly. In fact this is a quick method to dry a film when developing. After the last rinse with water, dip the film in ethanol. It dries very quickly. But I would not recommend this method for the one and only wedding negatives...
