A Vegan told me about gelatin...

Could this be one of the reasons Salgado switched to digital half-way through Genesis, after all you can't be serious about photographing "other animals" while using their body parts in the process... lol

I believe, people should be encouraged to use their brain. There are hardly any black and white decisions one can make that relate to ethics. For example, if you are truly against killing animals, then why do you tolerate other animals killing each other - therefore, what would be the solution, kill all the predators, or leave all animals alone? And if you decide to kill the predating animals, why then not kill all non vegan people? And if not kill the people, then why kill the animals? The choice has to be a compromise between your ideas about good and bad, the liberty of others, the law and above all, the common sense.

I think that being concerned for the suffering of other beings is one of the most admirable concerns of which I can think.

I agree—I think people should be mindful of what they consume, and its consequences. But you can use animal products without giving up concern for the suffering of animals, just as you can throw away garbage or drive a car without giving up concern over the environment.

Not entirely inaccurate. I'm not sure that they raised their own cattle but I'm pretty sure that (for example) cows raised with a high-mustard diet produced natural sensitizers (high sulphur compounds), so the gelatine is very tightly controlled.
...

What has always puzzled me, and struck me as quite unjust, is that while pork sausages contain pork and beef sausages contain beef, vegetarian sausages are not required by law to contain any vegetarians whatsoever.

Cheers,

R.

I remember reading a long time ago that the film manufacturers regarded beef from a certain area as the best, and preferred it. I either didn't know or forgot that it was due to mustard in the grass. Also, for some reason I thought it was the skin that was used to make the gelatin. Funny what age can do to your memory.

As to vegetarian sausages, well, thanks for the laugh. I'll have to tell that to my daughter who is slowly moving away from being a vegan. She likes bacon too much. :p

You didn't offer the film for her to eat did you?

I always tell such people – who KNOW they are better than me for what they eat, what they believe in, etc and feel compelled to make me change to suit their beliefs regardless of what I think – to leave me alone. Who brought them up to walk around telling others that they are wrong wrong wrong? My grandmother would have slapped me and told me to mind my own business.

Mustard feeding was one of the keys to sensitizing film to higher speed in the 19th and early 20th century. But it may have interfered with chemical sensitizers - by the mid of last century, when chemical sensitizers had taken over, film makers had switched to high purity gelatin, and spent their research money on gelatin purification technologies (like ion exchangers or osmosis filters, where Kodak held some of the key patents) rather than on cattle diets.

Oh, and finally a on-topic song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmK0bZl4ILM

Carpooling with a vegan??? Doesn't she know that the petrol/diesel/LPG used to power the car is also made from dead animals? Just because they died millions of years ago, and didn't have very many cells, doesn't mean they wanted to be burnt so the vegan can get to work.
;)

. . .
True. But "avoiding suffering" can also embrace "a good life and a quick and painless death".

This is why I pay twice as much for my pork as I could. I can live with eating a pig that has had a good (not battery-farmed) life and then been killed quickly and humanely.

Sometimes I think people deserve the same...

Then again, there are some people whose brains could best be used by rendering them down for the tiny amount of gelatine they contain, because they are never going to be used for thinking.

What's your point?
The point is that she was sitting in a car then made someone doubt about her own point so that he would then use a computer to ask RFFers about what she said re. films made with animal gelatin.

Not speaking about the main power capacities which have now been wasted for that thread to be online for a while.

Makes me think of Luigi's straps and cases : dead animals skins for leather, but vegan old-school chemical-free tanning baths...the best of both worlds, this is why those accessories are so popular amongst the RF users crowd for sure. :D

Buddhists do eat meat
I do agree with your premise that being concerned for the suffering of other beings is an admirable concern. However, that doesn't mean I can't make some fun at the expense of vegans.

To be honest, I don't understand vegans. I understand and respect vegetarians, but vegans.... Well, I don't understand why you can't use the remains of already dead animals but go to your job by car - the influence of automotive traffic on the habitat of animals is huge!

;)

I didn't know there was life in the Vega star system. Carpool, or alien abduction, inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks for the laugh Martin. Good post!

Isn't it honorable in a way to use all the parts of the cow as opposed to just throwing bones out? I dated a vegan photographer for two years and she acknowledged that there was gelatin in paper and film, but was more passionate about photography so she kept doing it, which is all you can do. Even if you get into digital you run into the same technical problems i'm sure, because being a true vegan in almost impossible, even for the most hardcore.
