A very sad day in my M history

Leica M, in a back pack, and motorbike. not good combination if you fell on it, spine can injure permanently. perhaps consider tank bag with good amount of insulation against motor vibration. that way you have it in front of for easier access too. when you park the bike somewhere, just get stuff out and leave it on. perhaps its possible to find model that can be locked, so bag itself does not disappear very easily ?

edit: "fell" was wrong word, consider rider might have to roll over 10-20 times before motion stops. Leica M or any similar bricky object between concrete and spine is a no-no.

If you're lucky, perhaps circulating the serial numbers at local shops will expose someone looking for a quick flip for cash.

I feel for you. But you do earn my respect in keeping cool about this. I hope the insurance will cover your losses and at least get a replacement MP soon. Hopefully CHP will get some lead on it.

On the brighter side, all the pics you have taken with that MP becomes more emotionally valuable now.

My situation is different, my daughters are more into photography than the sons. But recently one of my son tried my M8 with J3 and he responded - I like this camera 🙂 So I dunno. Hopefully, one day one of the will take over 🙂

I use a Tom Bihn Super Ego with cross strap. Gives me 3 points of contact.

Really sorry to hear about the MP…a lot of us do get rather attached to our cameras, myself included.

I hope this will never happen to me though — I use a bag with 2 independent attachment points (shoulder strap & padded waist strap, at 4 different points on the bag).
The reason I got this bag was actually more of a precaution for travelling, incase anyone tried to cut the strap on my bag and run/grab my bag in hopes that it slides off.
 
Sorry to hear about that, but it is good that you didn't crash trying to get back there and recover your stuff. That story would have ended a lot worse. As has been mentioned, I would definitely float the serial numbers to both local pawnshops and to camera stores as well. And keep an eye on Craigslist. Maybe --- just maybe -- your story with this camera can continue if you get lucky and find out where someone is trying to sell it.
 
Sorry to say, but your MP and laptop could have very seriously hurt somebody else, and your insurance might have refused to help you - it could have ruined you financially. Glad nobody got hurt. I recommend saddle bags.

I'm riding 70 miles on 280 or 101 every day, BTW. We might have seen each other.

OK. Everyone with expensive camera equipment who thinks it's covered by their homeowners insurance: Now's the time to call the company and ask if it really is covered. You may find that it isn't, that you need to spring for the cost of a rider. Also ask them if and how coverage extends when the camera is out of the house, say, in your car or in your bag as you walk along the street. Are you covered if you take it to another country and lose it there?

Sorry for your gear loss. I think you dodged a bullet here by ending up safe. And, others behind you ... dodging something much larger and deadlier than a bullet ...

@swoop, It was a messenger style bag with just one shoulder strap. Normally, I wear a backpack which of course is much smarter (2 straps) but today I just needed a few things and they all fit in this one bag I have perfectly. It's made by Acronym, a german botique technical apparel brand ... they're really quite something. After retrieving the bag it looks like the shoulder strap where it's attached to the bag on one end just came undone from the loop style buckle. It's a hard lesson for sure, but from now on if I need to carry any gear with me while riding I'll be doing it in my backpack and I'll be making sure the ends of the straps are sewed off so there's no way they can slip through the buckles.

Right after the shoulder strap came off, the pack was actually just sitting on my back seat for a little while kind of caught in the wind tunnel my body creates. I didn't grab for it because I figured the strap had just gotten looser, not disconnected, so I figured at some point it would just fall off the seat and my shoulder would catch it again and all would be fine ... but then 30 seconds later I could tell there was nothing back there any longer. It all happened at a pretty congested part where traffic was slowing from 75 to 20 pretty quickly, so I'm glad I kept my head on straight and payed attention to my driving rather than worrying about my stuff ... it could have been much worse. But still, after it's all over ... it was a sad day.

@all ... if any of you have a good lead on a used black paint MP, I'd appreciate the link. Doesn't matter how worn in it is.

I am sorry for your loss of material items... but after all, they are just "things".
(This is the strategy I would use to attempt to get over my devastation)

Yep. Nothing like this sad camera gear story at all, but couple years ago at a coffee shop, forgot my wallet on the counter where the cream, sugar etc. is. Upscale neighborhood, upscale place. Realized what I did - I'd say a minute or less? Wallet still there, $60 of cash I had in it - gone. Not that big a deal but to your point... Yep. We're surrounded by crooks. Sad, depressing. Hope there's such a thing as karma.
