One of my teachers, Polly Chandler, was recently contacted by a man named Corbett Bonilla stating he was an art collector and wanted to buy some of her limited prints. Everything seemed fine and she even received a check from the man. It turns out that the check was a fake and she got scammed out of her prints and the money. She is pretty devastated by it which is no surprise. Its a horrible thing to do to someone. Other photographers are starting to come forward about being scammed as well by the same man. If you are selling prints of your work, please be aware!!!

Maybe you can be very public online about how (for example) #17/100 is not longer artist endorsed and can be considered as stolen.

That way at least the next owner can be aware of it, if not decrease the value all together.

Very Sad to hear... Bummer !

Would it not have been more Sensible & Secure
To have waited for the Check to Clear
And then send the Prints.... Standard Normal business procedure

Accepting payment by check is largely unknown to me, and most EU citizens. Obvious question: should a check not be cleared by the bank before the prints are shipped out?

Here on the forum people always get the mods chipping in on sales whenever they mention bank deposit as a preferred means of payment but it seems to me a bank deposit is infinitely more safe than accepting a check, since a bank deposit can be reversed by your bank, at least in the EU...

Anyway, beware all you print-selling photographer artists, let's hope the scammer gets caught indeed.

Sad to hear that. This is one of the main reasons I sell 99% of my work through galleries and reps. You pay your gallery a healthy commission but you're protected. The other reason is I don't generally like dealing with the public.

From what I could gather, she apparently thought the check had cleared because her bank allowed her to draw on the funds that had been deposited.

Lots of people, especially here in the U.S. still do their banking by check. I am married to one of them.....🙄

i wish someone would buy a print from me…😉
