My first post so greetings to all
I have a question about metal lens caps for my A36 size Elmars. Is the factory cap brass or alloy?I bought supposedly authentic caps and they seem to be alloy.I was expecting brass. They do fit well however.

Page 146 of Paul-Henry van Hasbroeck's Leica, A History Illustrating every Model and Accesory, shows a dozen different A36 caps, 'made of brass, aluminium and plastic and in finishes which include enamel, nickel, chrome and anodized.' They are flat, domed, with and without steps and ridges... I'm not convinced that all the variants are there, even then.

I've had maybe half a dozen kinds. The question is, 'authentic for which period?'

Cheers,

Roger

Thanks,Roger.
I think it might very well be factory original becauase it does appear well made and quite solid despite being alloy. It also seems to fit quite closely;firm and with a good finish.

Thanks again

The original ones I have are alloy. That said, my favourite cap is plastic, from, I think, a pair of binoculars via a bargain bin. I like it because it is slightly more substantial, so less fiddly when pulling it off quickly - I have fumbled many an alloy cap in haste. It is also black, and suits my black IID well.

Regards,

Bill
