A7r with RF glass

How easy is it too see the focus with mf lenses? Better or worse than e.g. Nikon D800 or other modern non-electronic viewfinder FF dslr?

I've set the camera to B&W, focus peaking on high and yellow which makes it rather easy to focus with fast lenses like the CV 35/1.2 or Nikkor 50/1.2, I would say it's easier than with my old D800E.

Close focus with the CV 15 it's a lot more difficult because focus peaking will light up almost everything, but for stationery objects one can zoom in with the C1 button, two clicks will give 7.2x zoom and another click will give 14.4x zoom.

If it lights up isn't it in focus? At 15 mm the DOF could be rather wide?

If it lights up and it;s not in focus, how does that happen?

Focus peaking lights up those parts with the most contrast, so with a fast lens (read small DOF) there is a clear separation between what is sharp and what isn't sharp in the image and you'll see a nice yellow band (or white or red) going through the image when focussing.

With an ultra wide lens the DOF is huge so everything seems to be sharp and is lit up in yellow, but on closer inspection you'll see the focus isn't spot on. Of course this is only an issue when focussing closer than 3 meters, but thats what I like to do with my UWA's.

And don't be fooled by the so called DOF calculators, at these resolutions the rules change as D800E shooters (should) already know.

I'm pretty new to the Sony system btw so please correct me if I'm talking rubbish 😀
