A7r with RF glass

There's a larger point here: Sony E mount cameras don't really care what lens is mounted.
Think about it: here's a camera with a flange to sensor (film) distance thin enough that you can put a Leica thread lens and adapter on to it.
That's not an accident, it was designed that way.
The LTM is the thinnest lens mount made in wide use.
Therefore the E mount will handle almost any lens BY DESIGN.
Pretty nifty.

Correction: The Leica M mount is thinner than the LTM. Otherwise, you couldn't attach LTM lenses to M mount cameras. That was no accident. Neither was Canon's decision to make the EOS camera mount thicker than the BL-FD mount. The old lenses didn't fit on the newer cameras. Thanks Canon!

Now, back to our regular programming.
We have seen a 19mm Mega Expensive Leitz-R lens and a moderately priced 20mm Canon FD lens on a Sony A7R. Terrific results.
Still pondering:
1961 50mm/2.0 Dual Range Summicron on either Sony FF bodies. We have one YES! and one NO! vote that I know of. Both answers can't be right.
Konica 35mm/2.0 UC-Hexanon. Is it possible that the A7 (24 Mp) will play nice with the UC-Hexanon where the A7R will not?
1956 Nikkor 50/1.4. It obviously works. Has anyone tried the 18" minimum focus distance built into that lens? I would appreciate f-stops less than 1.4. Not all of us use lenses wide open all the time.
Waiting for Canon BL-FD results for 24/2.8, 35/2.0, 50/1.4, 50/1.8 and 50/3.5 Macro.
Canon EOS-EF lens samples would be nice. My 17-35/2.8 L lens on either Sony body would be awesome. Alas, it was built prior to 2006. So, no auto focus with the Metabones adapter. However, will the Metabones adapter operate the aperture (stop down) on older EOS-EF lenses??????
Thanks! Keep the information flowing. ;)

I just did a quick test of an OM 28mm F2.8 I had laying around. I put it on a very cheap adapter and the overall results are amazingly better than my RF 28s. There is zero smearing in my test (indoors close focuused) the image is nice all the way to the edge and there is very little vignetting even at 2.8.

I don't know about the UC on the A7, but it is like some RF lenses - BAD - on the A7r. I'm going with SLR lenses for anything shorter than 50 (and I am getting a nice Summicron 50 for the occasions when I need to know I'll get optimal performance).

I just got the A7R this weekend
My blog discusses my first impressions, with photos, of this lovely little camera...

Sending my A7r back and have A7 coming tomorrow.

We now have two threads--my fault--

what do you guys think, I should I post shots from A7 in the other thread?

I have no preference :)

And you're sending the A7r back because?
I thought you were enjoying it?

I have enjoyed it :)

At first I thought the A7r had more center pop than A7 even with reduced files, but as I saw alot of good shooters working with A7, I just did not see that anymore.

then we have A7r colorshift issues which are related to smearing to some degree I think, but it's nice to have less of that for sure.

next is the first curtain shutter: quieter.

FIle size: it wasn't too bad but smaller would be nicer.

and not least: 600 bucks. I can pay for something with that

This is the first time I've ever returned a camera, and I never thought about it till the tenth time I told someone to get the A7 instead of the A7r.

So I'm exchanging for the A7 :)

You'll be equally pleased I'm sure - if not more so.

Use the extra $600 towards the 35mm FE f2.8 Zeiss lens :)

Cheers,
Dave

It would be fun to "Frankenstein" some fixed-lens rangefinder lenses to work on these cameras - Yashica Electro series, Konica S2, Olympus RC/SP - even "Trip" lenses :)

i sold my canon dslr gear and never looked back, meanwhile kind of RF fanboy.... now comes Sony and drives me to look again for a decent wide DSLR lens. No. I keep my Leica Monochrom and lenses, and wait until Sony comes with wide FE lens. My stuff is over 90% black and white, I can wait.
I sold my m9 and will keep the A7r: focusing is way better and high Iso is nice to have. My 35FLE, Nocti 1.0, Apo50, 90AA, and Elmar 135 are great with this Sony. Time will show whether the M240 is followed by a winner, or Sony comes with more excellent lenses.

Carsten

Great fan of your pictures, Carsten: looking forward to your new ones with the Sony.

haha you are right.

The question really is: do you see that rez in downsized images. At first I thought it was apparent, but at 2048 I now don't think you can tell--but am far from certain.

Anyway the giant 54 mp monster will be here in a few years if I'm not too happy.

I never did get a nex-7, preferring the 5n because it did so much better with RF glass.

Hey, wait a minute... You're the guy who said only pixel peepers cared about anything other than the center!

not quite, LOL

I do shoot alot of landscapes so I need edges at some point, but f/8 is often fine.

The A7r is great with most 50s but it starts to get pretty picky 35 and wider; even with the SLRs.

Is anyone concerned that Sony may not be able to develop uber wide angle lenses for this camera?
What says that they can? Not trying to be the spoon ... just saying.

anyone concerned about that is not paying attention to the bazillion issues of concern confronting civilization today LOL

also there's a one word answer: zeiss.

They know what they are doing.

I'd bet within a year we will see many good wides for the A7r, but I like the old stuff. :)

I did a quick comparison between a number of wide angle and telephoto lenses on the A7R to see what works and what doesn't.

Photos and results are here: http://rangefinderchronicles.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/best-telephoto-and-wide-lenses-for-sony.html

My previous blog post using the A7R at the weekend with a variety of lenses is here:
http://rangefinderchronicles.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/sony-a7r-at-weekend.html

And here is a brief summary of my overall conclusion:

"Some of what I had heard and read is true. The A7R certainly has problems with some wide lenses, wider than 35mm at least. But not all. I'm more than happy to use the Voigtlander 21mm f1.8 and the Leica 28mm Summicron ASPH a... Nearly all the 35s work OK, and the Nokton works wonderfully, as do all the telephotos.

I had already decided 50mm was no problem over the weekend ... either the Leica 50mm Summicron M (last version) or the Voigtlander 50mm Nokton f1.5 II will be most used by me on the A7R.

The pleasant surprise for me is that the lenses I am most likely to want to use on the A7R are the same lenses I like to use on my Leica M (Ulton 21/1.8, Summicron 28/2 ASPH and 35/2 ASPH and/or v1, Nokton 35/1.2, Summicron 50mm f2, Nokton 50mm f1.5 and Summicron 90mm f2). Given I intend to use the A7R as a second camera with the Leica M Typ 240 (and not instead of it) it is good to realise I can share the same lenses between them, although I expect I will be more likely to use my Zeiss and other SLR lenses with the A7R for certain things, than I will on the M."

I'm very happy with the A7R - I think the key is to stop thinking of it as an alternative to the Leica M - once you see it as complimentary to it, doing some things better and some things worse, it makes a lot of sense. I'm so glad the M is a better camera in so many respects as otherwise I would be beating myself up for spending so much on it!
