Just got a suggestion about a Kiev 4. Good cosmetic condition, don´t know much about if it´s in working order. But if it is - what is a reasonable price for me to pay for it?

I paid for my Kiev 4 about $50US this summer, handling & postage extra (actually my wife was in Kiev and picked up the camera locally and paid cash for it). Camera was thoroughly tested by my friend and first 2 units he returned to seller (light leakage in first one and he is not sure what reason was but he didn't like the second one also -- supposedly shutter's sound :)). But I'm ukrainian and probably got for free some service that usually costs money. I would rather pay extra but be sure seller accepts unit back. Price in Sweden might be different, I dunno.

Anywhere from $20 -$60 US depending on working condition. This one looks like a late model 4A, no meter and plastic insert on the ST lever. Possibly an export model based on the extra lettering on the accessory shoe. In the US I would guess at about $50 plus domestic postage. In Europe, I don't know.

Who is the seller ? (This may say something about the working condition of the camera to be expected)

I don´t know the seller. It´s on an auction sight. I have mailed him questions about the working condition of the camera, so I´ll just have to wait and see. But he´s asking around $40 plus shipping. Whatabout that price?

Not bad if the shipping isn't outrageous. Again, I have no sense of perspective insofar as European prices go. I try to think of camera purchases in terms of what it actually costs to get it to my door. In your case, you might have a VAT charge as well.

$40 plus a max of $15 US for shipping would not be pretty good for a Ukrainian to US purchase, $40 plus a domestic US shipping charge of $7.50 would be even better. Add a state sales tax of 8.75% and it still would be acceptable for me.

that Kiev in your thumb nail pic is a Kiev 4a type 2 , worth from 30 to 40 US dollars. Shipping to Sweden should not be more than 20 US dollars. My opinion is to buy from only dealers of good repute, a few are mentioned on this forum, you might pay a little more, but it will be cheaper in the long run.

working condition of a kiev is hard to judge...
Reason being, kiev is a solid camera to begin with, with one flaw, the silk ribbons... it is hard to tell what condition they are in without taking the shutter cover off, and the camera will usually work flawlessly even though the ribbon is on a last breath (happened to me)
... soooo, there.

Soviet camera and Fedka ask a higher price around 70$ plus shipping. But the one I have got from Vikentiy Trofimov at soviet camera is perfect. This man is very friendly ...

If you do not know the seller, and consequently cannot ask recommendations by the forum, then you have in my opinion a 70 percent chance you will be buying junk (the body, the lens, or both). How much is the value of junk with a 30% chance the camera may work ? It is between you and you.

Ruben

PS: A reputable seller, Cupog, is auctioning at ebay a nice Kiev IIa, at $ 50 by now. It is going to end in the next 2 hours:

it's commonly said that 70s Kiev, especially type 2s, are the worst of the serie... you'd better pay a bit more for a 60s type 1 much better built and much more reliable. Same for the lens, the 60s Jupiter are truly great. That's my HO.

Mine is a ´66 Kiev 4, bought in 1982, and still in perfect shape. I wouldn´t recommend newer cameras as I´ve heard of lower genearla quality and performance, even for those fitted with Helios 103 instead of the Jupiter 8. This last is second to none and nothing less that the original Sonnar 2/50.
Good luck.
