Absolutely Killing the darn flash on an Olympus Stylus?

I love my Olympus Stylus 35mm point and shoots... except i always forget to turn the flash off and I hardly ever want the flash anyway...

So has anyone figured out how to circumvent this silly flash? If I just stick black tape over it, will the camera still expose correctly? Or can I pop the case and break something?

It won't expose properly if you just cover the flash. Maybe use high speed film? How about turning the flash off and leave the clam shell open. So what if the lens
scratches a bit?

It is annoying...no choice but to turn the flash off each time you open the shell. I just consider it an iso 800 (or more) camera, to try and force smaller apertures and avoid the flash. It's explained here pretty well:

I believe the mju ? mju 2? I love my mju2 but the flash is killing me. There is a way to disconnect the circuit somehow but it is permanent. I have to manually disabled the flash each time I turn it on. annoying.

If the camera thinks the flash is on it will expose accordingly even if you tape over it. I tried and it under exposed. It is a frustrating setting.

Same prob here. I have thought of painting over the flash with something to try and soften it but from what I`ve read so far that is unlikely to work.

I use a Minox GT for better images than what I get from my Olympus XA. The Stylus/EPIC drive me near nuts with the silly flash set-up.

I sold my XA, Stylus and RC. But I kept my Olympus Trip.

I fixed my mju/Stylus by dropping it once too often and knocking the focus and frame lines off.

I've been surprised by the scale focus, I expected more trouble but it's not too bad

You might tape in place a translucent colourless film canister (Fuji, for example), either whole or cut up.

Get John to sell you one with a good patch that he has serviced. Have Tina Reeves (downtown in the Powers building) do a proper eye exam and indicate you want contacts or specs optimized for focusing the XA. 😉

Mablo: The Trip is great, but doesn't do low light as easily as the XA.

fbf, do you happen to remember where you heard about disconnecting the flash? I can't seem to find anything. The flash doesn't fire on one of my Epics and I wouldn't mind doing that.
However since I have to set it to spot metering every time I guess it isn't much more work to set the flash as well...

You might want to try removing the capacitor. I did that to my Epic with the non-firing flash. Now the camera won't fire in auto or flash mode. You still have to set it to FLASH OFF, but at least you can't accidentally fire the flash.

I wonder if there isn't Mju2/Epic mod "flash OFF by default" or at least "LARGER flash button" (it's a joke...thhhh...."The Cars")

When I used single camera and it were Mju2 35/2.8 I got very good at quickly pressing those tiny buttons. I mean, stop spreading yourself between too many cameras 😉
