Achieving edges in prints on the v35C

I have a leitz focomat v35c.

i'm wondering what one would have to do to achieve an image of this sort with this enlarger.

not my image...


i was thinking of filing down a carrier, but wondering if anyone has any advice.

Hmh... interesting question... seems the "sprocket holes" would print approaching black with a regular filed carrier and straight printing.

If I really wanted to print this by enlarger I would try making a mask on large sheet film with the "sprocket holes" around the edge, and total black exposure where the enlarged image is going to go. Print the image, then expose the paper through the mask with white light to cover the whole mask. I would plan on using a fair bit of paper and sheet film experimenting!!

I'm not so sure I'm following.
Have you used the V35C?
There is little to no room for any light to pass beyond the 35mm Frame.

Please explain more, sounds interesting!

Maybe a sequence like:

-make a full size negative of the border area with sprockets image, with the original image area dense to block light - you might need to copy a frame with sprockets at less than 1:1 so you could print the negative in your enlarger. The full size contact mask might require some opaquing to get the effect
- print image with white borders - masking style easel
-remove negative, raise enlarger head for bigger light area on baseboard
- cover paper with contact mask
- expose again to white light from enlarger

I'm sure some other wet printers will chime in.

hmmm...i need to think about this for a bit to fully conceptualize this.

do you print in this fashion?
would it just be easier to get another carrier and file it down?

Ali_baba,

No, I don't print with a filed carrier or with "outside" embellishments. I am not tied to full frame, and will happily crop or print to standard paper sizes.

I used to do a fair bit of gum printing, and did work with full size contact negatives, sometimes several for a final print.

Do let us all know if you end up experimenting with this.
