Hi,

I have a palette of developer :

D-76
Microdol-X
ID-11
PERCEPTOL
MICROPHEN

Which one for developing an acros I would like to have a high contrast and a good acutance, don't care about grain.

Thanks.

Yvan

Dear Yvan,

Contrast is purely a matter of development, so any will do: more development = more contrast.

I found the tonality of Acros to be a swine to adjust to my taste, though, so whichever you choose, you may have to do quite a lot of refining (of dilution, time or agitation) to get the results you like. Others love it. The whole thing is very personal.

D76 or ID11 will probably give the best acutance (with minimal agitation) and at 1+1 may just about give you the nominal ISO speed; many developers give only 80 or even 64, and Microdol or Perceptol may only give 50. Of course these are true ISO speeds, so if you want contrasty negs, you effective EI will be higher.

You might care to look at http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/ps neg development 1.html, which is specifically about choosing developers, and also mentions what I used for Acros.

Cheers,

R.

I agree with Oscar on Rodinal 1+50. EI 100, 11 minutes at 68 degrees (20C)

Dear Yvan,

Though I'm not usually a Rodinal fan, and though I have never used it for Acros, on purely theoretical grounds I have to agree with those who recommend it. Grain is normally big but crisp (on slow films) and acutance is high. I restricted myself only to the developers you had at hand. My other recommendation would be FX39 at 1+14 (probably higher acutance and more true speed) but Rodinal is almost certainly easier. Even so I'd expose generously: EI 80 at most.

Amitiés,

R.
