Adapter problem - AGAIN!

Ok, what's the deal here... About year ago I struggled with ltm-->m adapters; the adapters did not work as they should and got detached from the bayonet all the time by themselfs. At that time I had M2 and some ebay-random adapter and one original Leica adapter. Same problem with both. Original Leica lenses did not come loose, stayd firmly in it's place (until i pushed that lens release button, of course). So the problem was in those adapters, right?

Now I have M6 and just recieved Voigtländer 50mm adapter and the same problem AGAIN! The lens definitely does not stay firmly enough on the adapter that I would be comfortable enough to keep anything valuable attached to that adapter. Am I having the worst adapter-luck known to mankind or is this just normal? When I grab the lens and twist it, I definetely don't have to use much force to get the lens out of the bayonet... I small child would have the muscle needed. There is definitely hte possibility that I could accidentaly twist the lens off while shooting...and that could be a disaster. And yes, once again original Leica lens without adapters stays 100% firmly on the camera, no worriying about that.

So, please attach your adapter lenses to your M-body and try if you can twist it of from the bayonet "easily" or not... This is absolutely way too annoying and frustrating situation again. And just 10 minutes ago I ordered (and paid) 35/1.7 with adapter...of my...that would be a real joy if that lens would also be dropping to the pavement all by itself.

And yes, to clarify; the adapter detaches form the m-bayonet -- not lens detaching from the adapter.

I had one CV adapter on which the notch was clearly machined on the p***. It would not latch with any M body. The shop exchanged it after they got over their shock at seeing a faulty one. Maybe yours is part of the same batch?

I've got the whole range of adapters - original leitz, voigtlander, no-name old one and brand new cheapo ebay chinese one. They all seem to work fine. Try this with yours: mount the adapter on the lens by hand. Mount the combo on the camera. THEN turn the lens further tightening it very firmly onto the adapter. Don't worry about locking it on too tightly as you can easily get it off by doing the reverse just as you remove the lens from the camera - if you see what I mean. In any case, as long as you only have M-Mount cameras it's a good idea to keep the adapters permanently and firmly attatched.

Putting the adapter on the lens without using the camera mount to further tighten it will definitely leave it too loose and I think that's what is happening in your case.

Hope that helps.

Andy, the adapter does not lock itself tightly enough to the camera -- you described a solution for a different problem. But thanks anyway 🙂

EDIT:

I believe the problem might be in cameras lock/release mechanism. I can see that it "locks" correctly when I mount that adapter to the body, when when I turn the lens that locking system just presses down and the adapter comes loose.

I had an M4 that would sometimes not lock up my M lenses never mind LTMs with adapters. The pin that Brian was talking about would not engage the slot in the lens mount 100% of the time. I had a CLA done and the same camera has locked up all lenses since even LTMs with the adapters.

The lock is a very simple lever that engages in a milled slot on the adaptor. It should engage with an audible click and remained locked until the release button is depressed. There are two immediately possible faults, the slot is wrongly machined or the bayonet is not allowing the adaptor to turn far enough. Check everything is clean and there are no burrs or dings on the adaptor, Cautious use of fine carborundum paper may solve the problem

I have only had trouble with one adaptor and that is my only genuine Leitz one. CV and chinese have been OK.

The other potential trouble is rim thickness, it's important for focus but doesn't affect engaement.

Hmmm...just dropped the lens to the floor... actually the lens jumped out of the bayonet.

Checked and douple (and triple) checked...everything seems to for just fine, nice "clicks" and adapter is not loose...but twist the lens and it comes off. If that 35mm adapter with that CV lens works, I think I'll settle with this situation and I need to forget this idea on using industar 61 lens with my leicas... Have allready spent 130 USD on faulty adapters and the lens costed only 7 USD 🙄 And I still need to tape the lens to the body if I want to take photos 🙂

I don't know about the CV LTM to M adapters but I have another brand that came with a key that will let you install the adapter first and then screw the lens into the camera. If your CV adapter is the same you could try mounting the adapter only to see if it really locks without endangering the lens. If I recall correctly, when I had my problem there was an audible click but I guess the lock pin still did not engage fully for some reason. Possibly dirt/dried grease in the lock pin works?

Oh, I see - that is weird! Actually I have a Kobalux M mount 28mm that mounts perfectly on my other M cameras but does the same as you describe on my M8 - if you focus to 1m too firmly it jumps off the camera(!). I can't for the life of me figure out why either. In the end I found another one (screw mount) to use on the M8.

I also have a couple of the adapters that came with the key to tighten them. I believe these were made by Marumi, and no longer produced. Properly tightened, I've had no problems mounting a variety of both Canon and Leica lenses on my M3.
I'd say Brian may be on the right track as far as fixing your problem.

Dear diary,

today I'm feeling fine. Just recieved CV 35/1.7 with m-adapter and it almost made my cry when I realized that the adapter fitted perfectly to my M6 mount and there is no worrying about the lens jumping of the bayonet... It seems that I really am having the worst luck known to manking with that industar lens and 50mm adapters...3 adapter and still no good. Well, maybe this is some kind of divine intervention, maybe "they" don't want me to use that industar. "Who are they?", I dunno. Once I recieve my summilux, I'll retire my "indu"...even if it is my favourite lens. I'll miss you my dear friend.

That's all for today, cheerios!

The M springs vary in tension, if you can lift the lens away from the body sufficient to clear the latch then the springs are too loose, for the bayonet depth of the adopter or lens.

Additionally if you look (by locking the shutter (on a non M8) from the rear) at the springs it is possible that not all the lugs are captured by the springs...

If you have any of these problems it is send the camera (with the ring or lens to a good tecco,) fixing yourself not for cack handed...
