I recently bought a Leicameter R4 in non-working condition, but cosmetically very good. It had the usual problem of crud on the sliders spoiling the contact, and I was able to fix that up with no problem. I put an alcaline cell in it, and was extremely surprised to see that it read bang on, at both high and low light levels. Someone had obviously adjusted it to be accurate with a 1.5V cell.

Since this one is accurate, I'm not going to mess with it, but for future reference, I'd like to know the correct procedure for adjusting these meters. Meters like this typically have three adjustments, for low level, high level, and battery check. An almost identical circuit is used in the Leica CL and M5 incorporating these three adjustments. The R/R4 meter has only two adjusters. Can anyone on the list tell me the functions of these two pots?

I know about the needle zero setting, and I know there is no calibration info in the little user guide that came with these devices. I have done a lot of looking on the Internet, and was surprised to find that I have been unable to locate anything explaining the calibration of these meters. With high range and low range adjusters, it's important to know which is which. If you get them the wrong way around, you will end up with a very nonlinear meter.

Cheers,
Dez
