One of my friends has, I think, an unique Leica.

He does not use it, but... does not want to sell it.

This model is known under the German nickname "adler".(eagle)
It was developed for and used by the German airforce during WW II.

Who has more information about this type?

Wim

I know the German Air Force had a version of the Leica IIIc made with Ball-Bearings in the shutter for use in cold weather. It was called the "K" model, and had the K on the shutter curtains. I have read in places that the post-war Leica IIIf followed this design with the improved shutter.

Is this the model that your friend has? Look for a K on the shutter curtains, with the lens removed.

Hi Wim,

The nickname "Adler" suggests that you are describing a common military Leica fake which shows an eagle symbol ("Reichsadler") in combination with an airforce ("Luftwaffe") engraving. Quite a detestable example can be found here:
http://www.ozdoba.net/leica/schraub_sammeln_d.html (displayed there as a warning for collectors).

If your friends camera looks like that, it's certainly a fake and not unique at all. I am not aware of any real "Adler" Leica. But then I am not an expert in this field.

If you need more information on real military Leicas have a look at auction cataloges or the well known collector references (e.g. Laney). There is also a special book on military Leicas (in Japanese language).

Best, JoNL

Most, or quite possibly all, Reichadler Leicas are fakes.

Lufwaffe Leicas are engraved 'Luftwaffe Eigentum'; there are also 'Heer' models and as far as I recall the SS used Contaxes.

Cheers,

Roger
