Adobe Flash and impatience in the age of the internet

Why are the people that dislike Flash so angry?

What annoys me is people that are so lazy that they don't have their own website - they use some second rate photo sharing site like Flickr :D

I agree, annoys me almost as much as people who are too lazy to code their own cms instead of using some second rate blogging software - like Typepad :D (...)

And yes, flash has do die; the sooner, the better.

Can we really not wait for a few seconds in order to view some beautiful content on our screen? Impatience is not a virtue in my opinion.

No way, ever, when my purpose in going to the site is to get contact information or other basic info. Its one thing for gallery subpages to be slow loading Flash pages, but when the site's top level home page take a long time to load its a pain in the ass and tells me the photographer has no concept of and/or no concern about customer service.

The biggest problem with Flash is that it locks you down in a proprietary technology that is reliant entirely on the market performance of the company that owns it. The market will change whether you, me, or Adobe want it to or not. This should sound familiar to anybody who still enjoys shooting film in a digital age.

The good news is that fully W3C compliant website building is getting easier and easier all the time. Check out www.squarespace.com.

Another example of Modern Impatience

Another example of Modern Impatience

What I find really interesting about this attitude is the complete lack of patience it shows. Not only that but there also seems to be a sense of pride about this impatience.

My sister and brother-in-law come from a conservative farming background although now retired to the seaside. They have a similar attitude to modern technology in that they have a computer and an internet connection but refuse to use email or learn how to do more than basic word processing on the computer, and they have a mobile phone but refuse to initiate the texting or messaging features. Basically they have chosen to adopt a couple of features of each that suit them but resolutely refuse to adopt features that are commonly used by family and friends or that would be of benefit to others in communicating with them.
What rang my bell about this was the comment about this "sense of pride" which is reflected in in their obtuseness and their justifications for their stance which, frankly, border on the pathetic.
What I put it down to is "Willful Ignorance".

I don't think anyone is obligated to adopt every and all available technology. In fact, people who insist that everyone use everything strike me as clueless. Technology is there to make life easier for humans. Period.

I can't stand people who make me wait for their pictures to slowly load via Flash. I pay for high speed internet so I don't have to wait. I understand using Flash so you can control the display of your images. But understand I don't have time to sit through a slew of crap you think is great on the off chance I'm going to like something eventually. What kind of arrogance does it take to assert that each and every image you make is worth extended reflection?

One thing I cannot understand is the feeling that anyone who doesn't like Flash for clearly stated reasons is a "hater," as if these objections are irrational. To me it's irrational to think slow-loading images somehow improve them. Doubly irrational to criticize someone who lacks the patience to wait for something they haven't seen. Do you want people to see your images? If yes, then act gracious and don't abuse my patience with "clever" Flash.
