Adorama came through in a big way! Canon 50/1.2!

Well still on the hunt for an OEM hood, kevinscameras has offered me an EX+++ (as he describes it) one for $175, I may pay the money, even though it is ridiculous since I want it so bad. Seems kind of silly since a generic 55mm wide angle metal hood for $10 will work fine too...I also can buy one for 14 GBP that is for the Zuiko 55/1.2, but I have some time to look since I cant have it mailed now anyway (moving next week)

Oh the choices...

I'm not sure if Walz made a hood for the 50/1.2, but the one for the 50/1.5 is nicer than the Canon hood that I have for the 50/1.4. The Walz shade is vented, and beautifully painted. It feels a bit heavier than the original Canon hoods. The other type to look for is a Series VII filter adapter and hood.

I once bought for $650 a camera bag filled with Canon items. It included among others a mintish VI-L in a beautiful leather case, with a Canon 35mm/1.8, 50mm/2.8, 50mm/1.2 with leather cased lens hood for the 1.2 and a Tiffen filter, and many accessories like Canon lens hoods. It also included a Canon Meter.

Aaaaah, what a wonderful buy that was.

If you can justify (afford?) the expense of the genuine hood I would suggest you go for it Colin ... they really are a nice hood and the look and fit are absoultely perfect IMO. (not to mention they work with out blocking your view)

Plus ... much like the lens I can't see them going backwards in value!

Keith, has your original hood ever loosened from the lens? I have one too, and sometimes I'm afraid I will knock the hood off when I'm carrying the camera over my shoulder. The fastening screw is so tiny and hard to tighten...

It's never happened but I guess the possibillity is there ... I always wind the little screw up pretty tight.

You've got me worried now! 😛

The Canon factory hood is way overpriced and really not as rare as it`s all hyped up to be, I don`t find it as practial at all for a "user" hood either, it just looks good that`s all...... 😉

I`ve found the 57mm clamp-on Yashica 35 hood to be the perfect hood combo when using on a M Leica, funny the generic lens hood cover, almost matches the M6 covering, it looks really sharp and it cost me like $15 for both, from a small camera shop here in town.

Next to my "Wartime" f1.5/50 CZJ Sonnar T and my Canon f1.5/50 the f1.2 is also one of my favorite lenses, never falling short of what I try to get out of it and on the M6 it`s wonderful!

Tom

PS: Ohh filters for the f1.2 are a pain, while Canon designed them special for the lens, with a recessed mount and raised glass, you have to be lucky to find them, but it`s worth having an original UV or Skylight filter on the front to protect the glass, you can find them on ebay sometimes under $40......

Well I had to make a deal with my wife, I wanted to by one of the small laptops with the Intel Atom processor, and the one I bought was $400 (2GB Ram & 250GB HD) so I promised to not buy the outrageously priced Canon hood, I will either get the Yashica or Zuiko hoods that clamp on since they can be had for about $25 or less, not a bad trade off since I am loving this little PC. It has great battery life (5 hrs) and weighs 2.5 lbs!

Your computer has already depreciated more than that Canon hood has cost.

Should have gone for that Micron Trek II on Ebay for $35....

Well not sure what a micron trek II is but I am sure it wont run microsoft office 2007 and adobe photshop, as well as I am running windows vista, I have a high powered desktop but this is nice for travel, I can check my email without lugging around a big laptop, also makes it easy to edit the digital photos from my Ricoh GX100 on the go since it has a SD card reader built in.
