Hi,

maybe some of you are aware of the great, hard work the ADOX team in Germany is currently doing:
They have bought essential parts of the former Ilford Switzerland factory in Marly, modernised it in the last two years and are now running production there on their very sophisticated coating machine "E".

And they are building a second, new factory building at their main factory location in Bad Saarow (near Berlin), Germany.
Here are some pictures from the construction:
http://www.adox.de/Photo/category/neubau2017/

At that new building a complete new photo chemistry production (for powder and liquid chemistry) will be implemented.
And labs, a cold storage house for film and paper jumbo rolls, converting capacities.
And modern coating machinery.
ADOX is currently working on a complete new, totally self-designed and then self-produced BW film.

They already have three complete new products:
1. Innovative new high-tech gelatin filters, produced with the legendary Cibachrome colours. They are coated on a PET-base, on their machine "E" in Marly. Very easy to handle, and extremely cheap (less than 8€).
Available in all filter sizes.
I've done some tests with their 85B filter type with CineStill 800T. Results:
- very good optical quality (much better than former gelatine filters)
- very good color quality
- extremely easy handling (no filter holder needed)
- negligible price.

Have a look here:

2. And they have just introduced a new odorless, extremely environmentally and user friendly new stopbath: ADOSTOP ECO:

3. And a new, further improved version of their ADOTECH developer, ADOTECH IV:

Very much looking forward to the continued success of ADOX.

Any news on the Variotone Premium paper Jan? I’ve heard that it is being held up by Ilford, and I’m hoping that Mirko will have space and equipment to take over the coating.

Well yes, Variotone Premium is from a former cooperation between Ilford and ADOX. It was made by Ilford for ADOX.
It is still available in some sizes:

The strategy of Ilford has changed much since the new investor bought Ilford Photo / Harman technology in 2015.
Before that time point Ilford has been much more open minded to cooperations in the industry.
Now they are focussing on strengthening their position and only cooperate in a deeper way with companies which have absolutely no own production capabilities like Lupus Imaging / AgfaPhoto, Maco (Rollei-Film), Bergger, Oriental.
All these companies are only very small distribution companies. They cannot produce anything by their own. They are completely dependant on suppliers with real production. So it is easy for Ilford to keep them in dependency and 'under control'.

I was wrong. Film is not dead. Still have complete all Leica darkroom which I now share with my son.

Home color is going away and has been since 1970. Harder and harder to get supplies in small home quantities. I hope the problem gets fixed.

For those who do high volume or fast turnaround commercial work, digital is the way to go without question. I also love doing color on my computer as I can do things that are really difficult in a darkroom such as split color balance, saturation, contrast, levels, composting.

Guess there is room for both.

You have my full respect, Ronald.
Only few people are able to admit if they've been wrong.

Fortunately you are here wrong again ;).
Color in your own darkroom is more easy then ever!

a) Film processing: JOBO has introduced two new and improved processors for home developing of C41, E6, BW negative, BW reversal and RA-4 color paper.
Excellent machines, very easy handling and excellent processing quality.

And Lukas Fritz has introduced his new fully automatic "Filmomat" for E6, C41 and BW negative processing.

Fuji Hunt, Tetenal and Bellini (and CPAC) are offering all color processes you want. All the chemistry is easily available.

b) Enlarging: New enlargers for BW and color film are produced by Kaiser, Dunco and Kienzle. New enlarging lenses are available by Rodenstock.

c) RA-4 color paper: Is available from Fujifilm and Kodak Alaris in different types and surfaces. Extremely cheap in bulk rolls, much much cheaper than BW paper (you cut it by yourself). Some companies are cutting it for you in sheet sizes.

Guess there is room for both.

Of course :).

Yep! Began my experimental "return to film" a year ago through this forum. Loving it... so much that my "New Year's Gift" to myself this year was a refurb Jobo CPE2+ and I've put 17 rolls through it so far of B&W, but I bought it with the intent to do some color, too. Ordered a Tetenal C41 kit (which is on backorder) and an Arista C41 as a starter. We'll see how that works.

Curious about the ADOX films as I know nothing of them and kind of have my hands full with Kodak, Ilford and now Ferrania's P30. How many more can we fit under a tent? But yes, even though I don't shoot any ADOX, I'm delighted to see they're doing well. One day... I'll give one of their films a whirl.

Their Silvermax is a great film. Classic look, with a soft tonality in the dedicated developer, lovely highlight tones, but still rich shadows. Also works well with Rodinal in my experience. Of all the smaller manufacturer films I’ve tried this was the easiest to dial in by far.

Yes, I agree, ADOX Silvermax is indeed an excellent film. Due to my intensive tests it is the best of the current ISO 100/21° films with traditional emulsion technology.
It has better resolution and sharpness, and a bit finer grain compared to FP4+.
In comparison to Kentmere 100 (and the Kentmere 100 in different packings: RPX 100, APX 100 New, CHM 100, Oriental 100) and Fomapan 100 it is much much better.

Another advantage of Silvermax: Gives also excellent results in reversal processing as BW slide.

+1 for Adox Silvermax. I’ve shot and developed (in Silvermax dev) about 15 rolls in the last few months and it is truly wonderful. Please, Please, please Adox, if you are reading this, make Silvermax in 120, it would be fantastic.

It really would be. I recall Mirko musing about a 25 CHSII a few years back. I would very much like to have that in the mix as well, if we are dreaming.

The ADOX CEO has explained several times in detail that Silvermax in 120 is absolutely not possible.
Silvermax has been a limited production run. It cannot be made again. The raw materials for it are gone.

But I assume the new, currently being in its design phase, ISO 100/21° ADOX film will be even a bit better.
And that will be available in all formats: 135, 35mm bulk, 120, all standard sheet sizes and special sheet sizes up to even ULF sizes.

Cheers, Jan

Yes, he said an ISO 25/15° could be possible. I wouldn't be surprised if that will be the next coming film after the ISO 100/21° type.

Cheers, Jan

Hope to see more ADOX products available from Freestyle,
which is likely where most USA users will purchase them.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to their new 100 ISO film, hopefully availabe as 4x5 on a proper 0.180 mm base.

As their CHS 100 II sheet film is coated on a 0.180mm base (I think officially its 0.175mm ;) ), certainly the new film will also be coated on a real, thicker sheet film base.

Cheers, Jan

I do! This shot is taken with my Leningrad rangefinder and Jupiter 8 lens on Adox CHS 100 II.
