ADOX Silvermax first photos / samples

Just out of the darkroom.

I ran two rolls today.

First, a roll shot at 100, which I ran in Rodinal 1:25 in a tank with two rolls of CHS 100. I used my standard for CHS: Pre-wash in LFN Wetting agent, 9 minutes in the developer with 20 seconds of agitation followed by 2 inversions per minute. Negs look wonderful. Better shadow detail than the CHS, highlights seem just as smooth.

Second a roll I shot at 100 and then the second half of it at 80, in the dedicated Silvermax developer for 12 minutes with recommended agitation of 30 seconds initial then 1 inversion every half minute. Also looks very good. A bit better shadow detail than my first roll, and a smidge more contrast.

I'm hoping to be in the darkroom tomorrow morning to pull some prints, so hopefully some scans at long last on Thursday or Friday.

Phew, I have spent part of the last evenings in the darkroom and made my first tries with fixed gradation fibre paper. The hardest part seems to be to convince the paper to dry flatly. I do not have a dry mounting press, so I glued them on a plywood board with paper strips. I hope the glue will hold up. As for the tones, yes, it is really cool. I am asking myself why I did not try this much earlier. The prints that are drying right now are mirror inverted. Of course for artistic purposes. 😉 If they survive, I will post a scan from the fibre print. What I can say is that I find the tonality gorgeous and holding the print is quite a different experience from viewing the scan on a screen. Will go back to the darkroom to contact print a 6x6 negative.
 
We've been having wonderful weather for late October, far too wonderful for me to be in the darkroom these last few days. I'll have the big storm here next week, so plenty of time in the dark.
 
The gluing method works quite nicely, the fibre prints are super flat, but one has to be careful not to remove the prints too early, before they are totally dry. This is just a pretty straight scan from the test shot. The print is actually looking quite different in terms of tonality from that scan on the screen below, but well, I have the original to look at now. 🙂

Thought I would resurrect an old thread as I finally got to shoot my two rolls of Silvermax.
I developed in Rodinal at 50:1 as per massive development chart.

I'm very impressed with the film and its tonality with this combination and have another 10 rolls on order

I've been developing Silvermax in Caffenol !!!

So far I'm happy with the results. You'll have to click on the link below this image if you want to see it better. I'm still trying to figure out how to insert images from Ipernity that aren't so small.

I've been using the Caffenol-CH recipe found in the Caffenol Cookbook (easily found online and free). It was all so much easier than I expected. I developed Silvermax (exposed at ISO 100) for about 17 mins. at 68F. Agitate first 30 sec., then I do a few inversions every 3 minutes after that. My guess this combo would work well with my version of semi-stand development (toroid agitate initially then once at halfway time). I find such good latitude with Caffenol that I can usually guess the appropriate development time get adequate results. I'm a convert. Not sure what I'm going to do with all that Rodinal in my chem store.

Just received 4 rolls of Silvermax from Freestyle & Silvermax developer. Will be testing this and Rollei RPX 400 120 in the next 2 weeks. Any suggestions on developer and/or exposure?
 
I have been very impressed with the tonality of Silvermax . I have been exposing at 80 asa and developing in Rodinal at 50:1 as per the massive development chart . I not sure of the advantage of the dedicated developer but massive development chart should give times . I think it's similar to Rodinal ???

My FLCS (favorite local camera store) has started carrying the Adox Silvermax. I bought a bunch along with the developer when they got it in a few months ago, and I was *finally* was able to develop, scan, and even more amazingly do some prints in the darkroom last week.

While I've only shot one roll thus far, I'm seriously impressed by it, especially for shots with deep shadows, and bright sunlight. I plan to shoot a bunch more this year.

Is there any continued interest in this film? Some of the shots here have rich tonality. No new posts since mid-2013. Have people concluded there is either something or nothing you can do with it, that you can't do without it?

Photographers just use and enjoy this wonderful film......at least I do that 🙂
 
I'm still using it, albeit not as much as I would like. It's a tad expensive and I've been getting TMax 100 and 400 for good price lately. I have a stock of silvermax in the fridge/freezer and pull a roll for those times I want to use its great characteristics. I truly like the film. I don't know if the rumors I heard are true, but silvermax is a lot like the old APX100. I still have some of that in 4x5, but I'm shooting LF even less these days.

Rob_F. I wholly encourage you to get some of this film. At the least, you'll be satisfied with it. I've developed it in Rodinal, Caffenol, D-76, and HC110. Best results for me came from HC110 and Caffenol.
 
It was out of stock in the UK, at my usual sources, for a while and has now appeared in slightly different packaging. When I have a moment I will post a shot or two, I'm happy with it.
 
I've only tried it once and only have one shot in my stream (the rest were private)

I exposed that film at aprox. ISO80 and just dev'd it along with APX100@100 in rodinal 1+25 since I've read something somewhere that made me think that this would be ok. Well the negs looked pretty not thin or thick
